All the recent anime has been terrible. TERRIBLE. I thought Death Note had a chance until that L character started playing super detective and started pulling sh*t out of his ass. That series has gotten outta hand fast. Your best bet would be to play Kingdom Hearts if you already haven't or MGS4 when it comes out.

I think you must just pick the wrong shows then. As far as Death Note, L was always a "super detective" so I fail to see how that changes anything.

If recent anime is all terrible, what would you consider good?

I thought D Man Gray ended this past week? I know I was sitting in an IRC channel and I think episode 18 for DMG came out with the title before it something like "It's finally over" or something like that. I've heard that DMG is good, but I've had 0 ambition to watch it. Especially after someone told me Welcome to the NHK! would be good and the show was just like .

*SOME DN SPOILARZZ*

Death Note got pretty "meh" once Raito gave up his Death Note and the corporation got one. To me, it seemed that they were grabbing at the ice trying to pull themselves up from a potentially early death. Sure, Looney Toons worked well with Elmer Fudd constantly chasing Bugs Bunny, but L "chasing" Kira just got boring.

*END DN SPOILARZZ*

I actually agree with him, the current anime is a bit lacking compared to even 2-3 years ago. Some of the series that have been mentioned here are from about 2 years ago (Naruto, Bleach, Prince of Tennis, Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal! Panic, etc). I don't think anime is horrid right now... just nothing horribly noteworthy.

One anime I just thought of that I liked, although you may not since it's not fighting is Battle Programmer Shirase (also called BPS). It appealed more to me because of my own nerdiness, but it's fairly short (easily watchable in a day... I believe 12 episodes where each "episode" is actually a part (so it's more like 6 episodes or 12 halves)). I'd say the best classification for it is comedy.

Oh and for the person who mentioned Godanner. I know I've seen some of that show, but I can't remember if that's the really old mecha anime or not... the one with the weird bunny girl :p.

Godannar is fairly new. Released in Japan in 2003 with a US release in 2005 the final Dvd was released just back in August of 06.

Must be something else I'm thinking of... all those mechas blend together after awhile . I coulda sworn though that Shinkon Gottai Godannar was old... but even looking it up makes me more puzzled as to what anime I was thinking of. I'll have to ask a friend of mine who's well-versed in anime.

The last Naruto filler was the last episode of the series, episode 220, which was last week. Episodes 136 to 220 were fillers, so if you watched to 110, you never even got to them.

i dunno i guess it was further than 110.... it was after the people from the sand country saved em and they fought.... maybe 5-10 episodes after that happened?

That sounds fairly close to where the fillers began. If I remember correctly, they started after the 2-tailed Kyuubi Naruto vs Cursed Seal Level 2 Sasuke fight. I read the manga for awhile after that point, but I kept getting bored and bored with it, so I eventually quit reading it. Also, I didn't care for the LQ releases, since Inane slowed down considerably (although I do know that literally 20-ish chapters are sitting almost done.. I think they just need to be edited in and QC'd if I remember correctly, but there are so few editors).

When do the new episodes start? Are they going to be subbed 1 at a time per week -- meaning that 1 new ep. per week? Is there a uniform location for the episodes or do I have to find them on youtube or myspace?

Haruhi

One of the best anime shows I've seen!

And a fairly popular H-game overseas

I just finished Ergo Proxy 2 days ago, definitely recommended.

Some trends I've come to realize about animes that I've watched and enjoyed:
- theme songs are done by bands/artists that have done popular series earlier on
- reputable animation production groups (i.e. Gonzo)
- first episode is like WTF IS GOING ON but a good WTF

Are you new to anime?

New Naruto start this week. Yes they get subbed once a week because they only air once a week (certain cases you will have specials or double episodes). A day or two after they air (especially for more popular anime) they'll typically be released via IRC and BT and go to other channels from there. Your best bet is BT or IRC in the fansub channel for the episodes quickly, and YT for the episode in crappy quality and if you can wait.

Oh trust me, I've heard of it and have it. I think the other one just starts with a 'G' to or something. I haven't heard back from said friend yet about it and looking through my collection takes too long (it's kind of messy). I'll let you know what it is when I figure it out.

Really good anime series I'vve gotten into is Samurai 7, it based on one of the greatest movies ever, Seven Samurai, but with a futuristic twist. It is a somewhat short sereis at 26 episodes but still a good series.

FLCL is pretty good. its short and sweet.
Noir is great and addicting so is Hellsing
FMP is funny as can FMA. Though I didn't like the movie for FMA.
Appleseed has a great style
Cowboy Bebop has a great soundtrack and storyline.

One of the best anime shows I've seen!

It is obvious that you have not played the game, not even the english translated version of the prologue. cuz if you have had any experience with the game, you will instantly notice from the get-go how clearly "disillusioned" (the title for the OP theme, btw, how fitting!) the director/staff were and lacked any idea of what the game is about. Not a single fan of the game I came across , myself included, spoke highly of the series. They either stopped watching right after the first episode, or tried to bear with it to see how far much further it would degrade itself, with a faint hope for improvement. I am willing to bet money they never tried the game either  btw, they have finished translating the first arc of the game last time I heard. Wonder when they would finally get to HF? I made some longwinded rant about the series (and about eps19 in particular, I stopped watching there) and why it sucks big donkey balls. Yeah, tis kinda personal when I get flack for recommending the series even before I saw the promo came out :(

In its defense, I would say the extremely poor production was further exacerbated by the fact that it was aired at the same timeframe with the much hailed KyoAni series found on that list; the latter is a beau ideal of anime making, in terms of everything encompassing splendid and immaculate artwork and animation, consistent level of drawing quality, exceptional adaptation and abridgement of the material, timely and witty use of parodies and much more. As a loyal fan of the original by Nagaru Tanigawa, I can confidently and enthusiastically recommend the series to fans and newcomers alike.

Madhouse is a favorite studio of mine, and the show seems to reflect their quality. Although I do not know enough about the original, the series has been fun and engaging so far (as of eps18).

On a side note, I really dig Hirano Aya's voice acting on this one. She seems to be on a frenzy like Noto Mamiko was early last year, but it has been a hit or miss for me so far. Pachira and Misamisa were good ones IMO, while Kahlua (Angerune) was meh and Mei (Manabi) is ok but feels not-so-well-fitting so far. The umakamen role from sumomomomomomo sounded awkward at first, but I manged to get used to it by now :)

I am not entirely sure where you are trying to get at, but I will bite :p
TOO SAGGY!

as for your naming gonzo for reputable production... I know they are quite notorious for having noticeable drop in quality after the first episode ;) I did enjoy NHK ni yokoso and the first eps of Getsumen To Heiki Mina though, if thats any sign of improvement.

Going back to the OP's quesiton, here are my somewhat refined recs for years 2005 and 2006 in alphabetical order:
Aria the Natural
Asatte no Houkou
BALDR FORCE EXE Resolution (unfinished)
Black Lagoon
Coyote the Ragtime Show
Chevalier (unfinished)
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Kanon (remake, unfinished)
Musashi Gun Do :Q :Q
NHK ni Yokoso!
REC
Rozen Maiden ouberture
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
Top wo Nerae 2!
Utawarerumono
Zero no Tsukaima

2005
Air (TV/movie/summer)
Aria the Animation
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokurochan
Futakoi Alternative
Gokujo Seitokai
Mahoraba
Pani Poni Dash
Shakugan no Shana

I would admit shana wasnt anything to write home about in terms of plot and humor, but the gorgeous visuals it offers warrants a look. In no way is this list complete, heck I didnt even get to try Nanoha A's :( Shows not listed here are either those that I never got to try, wasnt interested in to begin with or liked but didtnt feel safe to recommend to everyone (e.g. Gift or Gyagumanga biyori2).
Last but not least, I strongly oppose the claim that anime has been bad recently. Manabi straight is a definite leap ahead from say, Azumanga Daioh. Perhaps a more accurate assessment is, a bad time for gungho mech/fighting genre fans.

As for this season, the stuff I am watching are in my sig. Definitely keeping my peeled for lucky star, clannad and the sequels for higurashi and zero no tsukaima.

Bleach, and naruto. Naruto has more then 200 ep's and every single ep is availble on youtube. If you hate fillers, watch naruto 1-135 and skip from 136 to 220.
