I's

It's a bit older (4-5 years?), but check out Cheeky Angel (Tenshi na Konamaiki). It is 50 episodes, has plenty of fighting and the plot sure is interesting. Also a lot of humor.

Oh snap...
looks like I could use some reading comprehension here.
I am not really into fighting genre, so maybe most of my recommendations are useless for you except Utawarerumono.

You might like Shura no Toki and Scrapped Princess.

TOO SAGGY!

as for your naming gonzo for reputable production... I know they are quite notorious for having noticeable drop in quality after the first episode ;) I did enjoy NHK ni yokoso and the first eps of Getsumen To Heiki Mina though, if thats any sign of improvement.

Going back to the OP's quesiton, here are my somewhat refined recs for years 2005 and 2006 in alphabetical order:
Aria the Natural
Asatte no Houkou
BALDR FORCE EXE Resolution (unfinished)
Black Lagoon
Coyote the Ragtime Show
Chevalier (unfinished)
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Kanon (remake, unfinished)
Musashi Gun Do :Q :Q
NHK ni Yokoso!
REC
Rozen Maiden ouberture
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
Top wo Nerae 2!
Utawarerumono
Zero no Tsukaima

2005
Air (TV/movie/summer)
Aria the Animation
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokurochan
Futakoi Alternative
Gokujo Seitokai
Mahoraba
Pani Poni Dash
Shakugan no Shana

I would admit shana wasnt anything to write home about in terms of plot and humor, but the gorgeous visuals it offers warrants a look. In no way is this list complete, heck I didnt even get to try Nanoha A's :( Shows not listed here are either those that I never got to try, wasnt interested in to begin with or liked but didtnt feel safe to recommend to everyone (e.g. Gift or Gyagumanga biyori2).
Last but not least, I strongly oppose the claim that anime has been bad recently. Manabi straight is a definite leap ahead from say, Azumanga Daioh. Perhaps a more accurate assessment is, a bad time for gungho mech/fighting genre fans.

As for this season, the stuff I am watching are in my sig. Definitely keeping my peeled for lucky star, clannad and the sequels for higurashi and zero no tsukaima.

appreciate the time you put into this post. exactly what i was lookin for. thanks.

Tri Gun is pretty good, and Samurai Champloo is very nice (though only 26 episodes). Also, Ergo Proxy is kinda interesting from what I've seen (only 23 or so episodes :p). Supposedly, Bleach is good. There is always Ghost in the Shell as well. Blood+ is decent I suppose. There a lot, so just look around.

Also, if you somehow haven't seen it, watch Neon Genesis Evangelion :p

Ughh. He should do himself a favor and skip NGE. Watch Rah Xephon instead. Infinitely better in my opinion.

Whatever swings your string. There are better, but NGE is kin to a requirement amongst anime fans. Kind of like a classic, despite any flaws the series have.

Personally, I liked NGE, but it isn't the best. I need to check out Rah Xephon though; never seen it.

I agree he should see it just to see it.

As far as RX, think NGE but better lead character (not nearly as "emo"), much better character development/connection, and an ending that is actually an ending. There's a beautiful AMV put out about the one of the relationships in the anime.

Monster
Juuni Kokuki
GITS SAC I & II
Planetes
Eureka Seven
Full Metal Alchemist

Each series I've listed is larger then the 26 eps you specified when you add up those with sequels, besides Planetes. I just had to mention Planetes since the character development and realistic representation is truly breath taking.

Anyone who pushes any series as a "requirement" to being a fan needs to be smacked... hard :Q. They're the same lamers who write thesis papers on Eva when they need to realize that Anno is just a nut job who needed some psychiatric help. They're also the same kind of people who swear by Akira, which wasn't even that good.

Oh and Vanilla, most of those aren't even fighting animes >_>.

Oh and Trigun is one word <_<.

You should just watch Initial D... (that being my favorite anime/manga of all time). Think of it as fighting... with cars (that don't transform :p). There's 4 main stages and 2 other stages. The first is 26 episodes, the second is 13, the third is a movie and the fourth is 24. Extra stage is a movie and Battle stage is a recap-ish movie. If you like eurobeat, you'd love the series.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Gravitation!

Or this other show I "saw" called Gakuen Heaven.. that's a "good one."

LMAO...

Another one I forgot to mention even though it's a few years old. Gantz, very unique plot with awesome fighting scenes. It's worth a look if you haven't seen it yet.

Good lord, please tell me that's in there for comedic value only.

dude... as much as I am a haruhist, I must admit gun-do was all the rage last year. God bless those gun-do parodies    (especially the hare hare yukai done in gun-do style)
i really wonder if the rumors of the staff for the show absconding with the production budget

As I have said earlier, I failed to notice the fighting genre remark in OP. Black Lagoon had some flashy firefights, and he might even like higurashi for Rena chasing K-1 wiht that cleaver screaming usodaaaaa :D FMP 2nd Raid FTW tho :)
