I'd have to agree with BigJohn and diamondgoat... there is a lot of BS in this thread.

I don't get a chance to play much anymore, but a few years ago (during school :D) I had my handicap down to 11 and was averaging 255-260 off the tee. If UDT89 is practicing to be a long driver, it's quite possible his maximum driving distance is 365 but at what cost? Long drivers are generally not the most accurate. My personal longest drive EVER was 325 yards and that was with the wind at my back and a *very* dry fairway (read: 75 yards of roll).

When I get a chance to play now, my scores are in the upper 90's. :( Practice makes perfect, and I have no time to practice.

But i am practicing to be a long driver. Im currently at a 365+ drive.

I'm going to go ahead and call bs.

That's impossible.

BS on you. Watch the ESPn/ReMax World's Longest Drive Contest sometime. You see a few over 400 yards at times. I think this year, overall the longest was 413 yards. The guy who hits 380+ consistantly usually wins it though. these guys have clubhead speeds around 180mph. Tiger woods can't even come close to that. He is 310-320ish AT MOST with 130-150mph clubhead speeds. Myself, I am around 280-290 consistantly and I normally run about a 10-12 handicap on a good day.

yep that is true but they use a VERY long shaft, their main target is distance, not accuracy... also they are allowed 3-4 drives..... often you see shots that way slices to the right...........

I've been playing about oh...3 months now :)

Best game I've played is a 52 on a par 37 9 hole course. Assuming I'm hitting clean, I usually drive 240-260, with a couple up around 275 to 280. I've had a couple games where I was on the green in two on a 480 yard par 5. My woods game is good, my putting is good, it's my little irons, like the 7, 9, and wedges that kill me. I have trouble getting any air under them and controlling my accuracy. My drives with my 1 wood, 5 wood, and 7 wood are usually very, very straight. For some reason, I pull my 3 wood to the left.

I'm a wuss. I can hit a golf ball only 25 yards and I'm proud of it. :D

z0mb13, make sure you get to work our your rotator cuff. All muscles would help your golf game :p One thing that really helped me is that I looked in cataglogs for tools to improve club head speed. I found this club that had a normal grip, and it had huge fins where the head should be, and when you swung it, you had MAJOR wind resistence. It REALLY helped me increase speed. I swung it continuously for a few minutes a day for a few months, I defitnely could tell my first round out

diamondgoat53, is absolutely correct. I did heavy weight training for a year and picked up about 60 yards on my drive and another 15-20 mph on my driver. I used to hit the ball a very short distance... but now I keep up with the head pro, assistant pro, and an ex Buckeye, especially when we play for money:D:).

As of this season, I am a 1.9 handicap. To all of you people who hit "280+ drives", I would like to see you actually hit that on a normal course on at least 3/4 of the holes that require a driver. Playing on a dirt fairway/rolling a ball down a cart path and getting 40 yards of roll to inflate your yardage is complete crap.

:disgust:

If all of you really did hit the ball 300+ yards and still dont shoot in the 70's, you must have the worst short game in the world and you should just quit playing.

Hrmm... now that I look up, I didnt see that anyone said they hit it the "300 yards" and hits the fairway. Who cares if you can hit a 300 yard drive if you block it 40 yards right? :Q

The last round I played I hit 13 fairways (only missed one :frown: ), albeit some with a 2 iron from the tee. I had 3 drives over 300 yards (one about 345), and the shortest was somewhere around 260. I only got a 76 because I couldn't get the short game going - lipped out on a lot of putts. Parred the back nine. Tough course, too, one I hadn't played in five years or so.

Yah, mine's pretty bad, which is why I on average score in the low 80's. I once took 45 putts in an 18 hole round :Q. I know, I couldn't believe it either...

I hit it 300 yards (sometimes, not average length) and hit the fairway. :D:p

17.3 handicap here. Just joined the club this year and started keeping track of it for the NCGA tourneys and what not. Anyway, Im naturally left handed, friend taught me to play right handed, but I manage. My driver, Taylor Made 320, averages probably 230-240.. early in rounds, I'm still warming up so it'll go bout 240. Later, gets up to 280, but that's about it. But the drives do stay straight.

My Taylor Made 320 irons are working well for me. I'm short on the irons, but it doesn't really hurt the game because Im consistent and have a slight problem with a pull, so no horrid slices :)

anyway

56 degree wedge 80 yards
51 degree wedge 100
PW 110
9i 120
8i 130
7i 140
6i 150
5i 160
4i 170
3i 180
7w 185
5w 195-200
3w 210
driver 240-260

That's typical of the good players you see on a public course. I've played for 3 years now and once in awhile, I get to play with single digit handicappers who blast irons, working them each and every way. But those are very rare on public courses.

I used to play a LOT back in my early 20's and was about a 10 handicap. I played in Maui on my honeymoon and shot an 80 :Q , with my first drive going OB too...

I love the game but it costs way too much here in LV, and my brother-in-law (yes, and my sister) moved back to CA so I don't get to play anymore.

I am without a doubt one of the "drive for show, put for dough" guys though. I can drive well and play around the green pretty good, but my putts add up to about the same as my fairway shots. If I could putt, I would be a great gopher, I mean golfer.

If all golfers owns a Callaway ERC II in their bag, every golfer will be driving 300 + yards :D

but then, it is considered illegal by USGA :(

As for calling it BS, call it what you will. The only one on AT that knows i long drive is BD2003. He's never seen my drive, but knows my friends that have.

The club i use is a OLD taylor made burner bubble. With a stiff shaft for swing speeds of 130-140 mph. I hope to save up for a ping isi tec with a penley shaft.

The way it goes that far is, my swing speed is upward of 130mph and its increasing. As far as workouts, i usually do hand grip exercises. Just to increase my hand strength. But its your total body movement, and how fast u can clear your hips.

And yes its 365 yards, not feet.

Thanks Jlarsson, for the backup

Oh yea, i dont play golf. I play 18 holes because my friends play. To me the best part of golf is " How far can you hit it?" Thats why tiger gets soooo much attention as well as John Daly did when he came on to the tour. Distance sells. Even if you suck. To me there golf isnt that fun, but sending a little white ball over 350 yards and getting little kids and adults to watch you at the driving range is more gratifying for me.

Golf is nice when the weather is perfect and u are with good company. But thats just me.

UDT, you should check out the Integra Hi-Brid, it is a clone of the Callaway C4.
4 reviews on the club from here

And you can get it with a UTS-65 shaft for ~114.00 from here

Now I do find it hard to believe that so many computer junkies hit it so far. Unless you've had your irons and woods delofted and swing a 50 inch shaft with a 7 degree driver I still doubt some would get 290. I used to play with my dad's old school weak lofted forged blades and developed a solid swing that way. Anyways creating power is going to come from the difference of your hip turn vs. your shoulder turn. ie. try not to turn the hip so much while turning the shoulder and getting your back to face the target, creating lots of torque. Having a wide takeaway also really helps for woods. Power will also come if you don't grip it too tight my honest best drives once in awhile are 300 and it usually comes when I'm barely gripping the club as you get your best acceleration this way. Regardless distance is overrated unless you're a pro and scoring in the 60's depends on hitting shorter irons for even the scratch player to beginner the point is still to save strokes and shoot for pars untill you encounter an easy hole, and this involves "up and downs" around the greens. And most holes aren't really straight therefore on a 500 yard slight dogleg if I have 150 left to the hole it by no means indicates that I drove it 350 since they the measure the hole length by two regular shots and regular angles. Oh and a pro is like a +8 meaning if they played on the courses we played they'd most likely be shooting low 60's and sometimes flirting with the magical 59. I've tried playing a course being prepared for a tourney and it was so much more difficult than the regular course due to length, green speed, pin placement, rough length etc.

this is not totally true.....

I read somewhere (in a golf mag) that the added distance by using the ERC is only for people with really fast swing speed (like 100+ mph), so the average golfer prolly will not see an advantage by using it
