Any decent free antiviruses out there?

i tried it but its kind of sucky. you cant move the box, its permanently locked in the lower right corner. the options are very lacking. also apparently you have to register an account with them and keep yourself logged in, or it stop working. there was some message about 'you must be logged in and register within 29 days' etc etc.

Thanks for the info,I still think Panda Cloud AV free version is one of the lightest ones available,http://www.cloudantivirus.com/en/#!/free-antivirus-download .

I'll be looking for something to test soon, definitely needs to be light. But for now what I have isn't causing me issues.

Looks like I'll be going full time with Avast much sooner. After seeing how fast it scans things I immediately uninstalled Avira and installed Avast on my main rig. Thanks for the suggestion guys.

I get the full norton suite with my comcast, it has some behavior I found annoying at first, but once I got used to it and learned how to deal with it I haven't had any problems.

Not free, but if you switch to comcast it is ;p

What about sandboxie using it in browser mode?
That's exactly what I do... no AV at all.
I scan with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware from time to time just to have that warm fuzzy feeling.
I have Sandboxie set to delete contents when the sandbox is closed.

I ponied up for the paid version out of appreciation for the product.

I've used AVG in the past and it seemed to work fine. Or..I didn't get a virus anyway. 🙂

I've been trying out AVG 2013 IS on my Win8 Pro x64 for about a month now,so far seems very good, updates regular but you don't notice that, does not seem to slow my pc down in general use or gaming etc....so they have improved AVG IMHO.

I would have to say top 3 third party lightweights are Panda Cloud Free version,Avast free,AVG free.

They are all doing a lot better then MSE.

Wow. I officially hate all free AV software.

Tried Avira for a while and didn't like it. Don't like AVG. I liked Avast for a while but they keep changing the interface and I already described some of its other failures. Now Bitdefender was awesome for a day. Had to create an account, no big deal. Then it quarantined a false positive file which is a game trainer and won't allow me to add to any kind of an ignore list. Great.

Guess I'll have to try something else. Panda or something maybe

Why not use MSE? It's not horrible when you add it with common sense 🙂

It's the ones that don't know bittorrent... or redtube. 😉

More realistically, it's people that know what they are doing vs people who don't.

Contrary to popular belief, virus/trojans/etc are spread more via normal everyday benign sites than p0rn and pirating sites. Ask my wife, those quilting sites are infested.

If you get Newegg morning emails you can pick up Norton or Bitdefender almost every week for free after rebate and usually others too. Nobody should be using the free crap.

I have been trying AVG 2013 free since the latest test show MSE is not improving on the hit rates. AVG is the first free AV that I've tested that feels and shows as fast as MSE on my PC's. Some of the others cause pages to load slower and pings to increase. MSE and AVG do not. Very pleased so far. Will update as I install it on a few more PCs.
