Could you guys please explain to me what debating is all about? I have little clue...
well in LD, which stands for lincoln douglas, we were given a prompt and had to prepare to argue both sides. you are given time to cross your opponent, basically making their argument seem utterly weak compared to yours, and then you have to come up on the fly your conclusion.
i enjoyed debating and speech in general. it was great fun for me and it was the same core people there with me week after week.
i HATED the super competitive schools that always wanted to guarantee themselves trophies. at my school our speech team was small, with a core of six people that went to all the tournaments, so we wrote all our own cases. i have debated people from the same school on the same side and went "hmm your argument sounds VAGUELY FAMILIAR... probably because i heard it two rounds earlier?!?!" since they had their more experienced debaters write the novice cases. (ugh) that's okay, we had one superstar from our school and she routinely kicked all of their asses.
debate is basically an organized smart fight.
