Just wondering. I never talk to any. What format? LD? Parli? IPDA? Cross-Ex?

I was a novice national champion IPDAer, but if you know IPDA, you'd know that that's not on par with most other debate formats. I could never get a constant-enough Parli partner to get to nationals there.

I was on Illinois State University's ADA team for 2 years. Not having had prior experience I was mainly a researcher. I did compete but I did SOOOO badly it's not worth mentioning.

So I guess I'm only going to get one REAL answer, eh?

I'm sure that anyone truly into debate wouldn't frequent a forum that is so full of crap arguments and armchair "quarterbacks".

i used to do LD when i was in high school, but i was never great. i'd usually wind half of my rounds, but that was never enough to move on. my best event in speech in high school was student congress. but i was also an extemper/dramatic/duo/oratory person.

i liked debate because i could rack up points like mad. six points per round win!

I'm currently in high school debate. Me and my partner are going to Nationals in Salt Lake City in June. We do Public Forum.

I wasn't good enough to be called a master debator, heck I usually only debated in large groups anyway. I guess you could call me a mass debator.

yes, I'm opening for Mwilding all week as well

Well, I was in the Mt. Sac forensic team, but then I failed the class, imaging that, I failed a speech class, in which the criteria to pass is to show up for ONE debate.

I'm not sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but for me debate was about competition. I was terrible at sports, so I had to use my mental powers to display my competitiveness. Mostly I just like beating people down with arguments. I've had two people leave rounds crying before. If you can't understand why someone would cry in a round, imagine being slightly nervous about being in front of people (most people are) and then having to come up with a 3 - 7 minute speech, on the fly, when you have nothing to say because your arguments sound so stupid it's hard to utter them.

Man that's satisfying. Better than coitus. Honestly. Is it wrong to enjoy that so much?

well in LD, which stands for lincoln douglas, we were given a prompt and had to prepare to argue both sides. you are given time to cross your opponent, basically making their argument seem utterly weak compared to yours, and then you have to come up on the fly your conclusion.

i enjoyed debating and speech in general. it was great fun for me and it was the same core people there with me week after week.

i HATED the super competitive schools that always wanted to guarantee themselves trophies. at my school our speech team was small, with a core of six people that went to all the tournaments, so we wrote all our own cases. i have debated people from the same school on the same side and went "hmm your argument sounds VAGUELY FAMILIAR... probably because i heard it two rounds earlier?!?!" since they had their more experienced debaters write the novice cases. (ugh) that's okay, we had one superstar from our school and she routinely kicked all of their asses.

debate is basically an organized smart fight.
