Anti war protester commits self immolation

What an idiot.

He lights himself on fire for the cause and nobody knows anything about it for five days until they identify him. Then he's a minor news curiosity for a few days. Then the US attention span moves on to the new season of 24.

He killed himself for nothing.
 
It really sucks for him that nobody really noticed, if he had done it in time square or at an anti war rally then that would really attract attention. Suicide for protest does not seem logical for me, but its a strong point none the less.

I?d like to thank the media, on this fine example of transmitted doom and gloom. Our lack of will has not only made us falter, we have now turned to celebrating malignant necrosis.

perhaps you missed the part of the article where it said he suffered from depression and was coping with alcoholism. Brave, maybe (it takes guts to set yourself on fire), but I doubt this guy really knew what he was doing. Sounds more like he needed some professional help.

Ignoramus, there was a well-known self-immolation which occured to protest the Viet Nam war, by a Quaker, and a father, at the Pentagon. It moved many people.

A Buddhist monk similarly expressed their profound opposition to the repression of buddhists by the catholic Diem; similar to some right-wingers in this forum, his sister-in-law trivialized that with the comment that it was a 'Bonze barbeques', shocking many Americans by her insensitivity and opening their eyes to the problem, with JFK ultimately finding the Diem administration, and his particular Diem's refusal to restrict the behaviors by 'Dragon Lady' Nhu and her brothers, the buddhist repression, unacceptable and he allowed a coup in which Diem and his brother were killed. She had been disowned by her own parents for her position favoring the buddhist repression.

I find the comments in the thread trivializing this contemptible and disgusting.

I'm a liberal-leaning sort of person and I believe that killing oneself to make a statement is a pretty ridiculous thing to do. I have severe doubts he commited suicide out of sheer strength of conviction against the war. It is a sad story when a life is wasted.
 
I don't recall any Americans torching themselves over the Vietnam War - that was the protest of a branch of Buddist Monks in South Vietnam.

The only 'Torcning' of Americans that I remember was accidental contacts -'Friendly Fire' incidents
incured with Napalm or White Phosphorus in 'Broken Arrow' incidents when incindeary weapons
were called in on our own position to terminate over-runs of encampments or combat units when
they had been cut off from the main group, or were in the process of being exterminitated
on the post-battlefield by NVA clean-up committees sent to kill the wounded American survivors.
