It's the Californian migrants I can't stand. They move here, increase the cost of housing, and drive like chimpanzees.

You guys elected Arnold Schwarzenegger Governor, seriously wtf?

I like to go camping in the Jedediah Smith State Park about every other year though.

whats to hate, good weather, beautiful places, amazing schools, good number of jobs, people are fine too, more informed than other places (no rednecks),

i agree with most of what you said. but no rednecks? gimme a break. go to north calif (i mean wayy north), or try elk grove. Basically, all the metro areas (SF, LA, etc) are the areas where there are no rednecks.

I can see why people hate Californians especially when we're grouped, by many of you guys, as the most liberal left-wing, snobbiest people in the world. Truth is...many Californians aren't like that.

Yeah, I think a lot of California bashing happens because of liberal bashing. The mistake here is to paint all liberals (or all conservatives) with the same broad brush. Hollywood is probably the heart of the Liberal Establishment. No reason to paint all liberals with the same brush. All you freedom-loving Libertarian Conservatives out there probably won't like being painted with the same brush as the Patriot Act-passing, wiretapping, budget-busting Establishment Republicans we have running the country.

I have had more blackouts and power outages here in CA in first several months - CA's power grid definitely needs improvement.

And their highway and roads suck! The roads in TX are of better quality. (maybe due to earthquakes? but still...)

QFT

On the topic at hand. I don't necessarily dislike California, I just don't like a lot of Californian's because I'm from Denver Colorado, and almost everybody that "migrates" to Denver is from California or Texas. So thats the reason why I dislike a lot of Texan's too.

If you're talking about 2000/2001, that's because of our screwed up electricity deregulation plan. Other states are learning the same hard lession: Montana, Maryland, and Texas

A lot of roads are in bad shape, but a lot of places are worse like Detroit or NYC. Our budget's kind of a mess. We have income and sales tax, but our property taxes are low, 1% and they only go up 3% per year max. Properties are only reassessed when they're sold.

Reasons people don't like California
- California often leads the country in political change (both good and bad types, imo)
- Californians are often very state-centered, without really caring about the rest of the country
- People think California is all smoggy, beaches, rich people and muggings (basically a tiny cross section of LA)
- California's economic state is ridiculous

Reasons I love (Northern) California
- Northern California (north of Healdsburg) is rural, beautiful and ignored
- Great wine

You do realize that California has the 5th largest economy in the entire world right?

Absolutely I do. You also do realize that the state nearly went into bankruptcy a short time ago, right? That's why I think the economic state is ridiculous.

Probably the following stereotypes:

1) It's seen as liberal - tax the rich, give to the poor.
2) Hollywood image - liberal, vanity-minded actors (even though the vast majority of the 34 million residents have nothing to do with Hollywood.)
3)High cost of living

I'm sure a lot of it is envy. I've been in the state for a over a year and it's great place to live. Beats the hell out of suffering through winter.

1. Actually just the opposite. California has the most regressive tax structure in nation disproportionatly hitting poor and working class taking high percentage of thier income. High sales tax. High use, excise and sin taxes. Top income tax braket kicks in at only 44K and it's ~10%. That's why if you make 75K in Califonia it anit Shat! 50% is gone to state and fed 35% before you get it 15% as you spend it.

2. Well thats true. Most Artists are bound to be more liberal.

3. Unture. Maybe in major cities it's expensive but plenty of places in California is cheap.. Like high desert, all of northern Cal or imperial valley.

I could take you places in Ca that you'd think you were in rural texas both attitude wise and economically. Remember Ca is #1 in ag and #2 in ranching and and even has hella oil in central Ca. (bakersfeild and taft)

What many of you fail to understand is that California is a large and diverse state. You can find almost any climate and type of neigborhood you want here.
We have snow covered mountains and beautiful lake tahoe. We have Southern California with beautiful beaches and large cities. We have large open spaces of desert with hot weather. We have the SF bay area with mild weather.
We have cities with large populations of hispanic and black people.
We have redwood and pine forests in Northern California, with small towns and fairly cheap real estate. The central valley has farms and ranching.
Come and visit, just don't plan to move here, too many of you from other states have already moved here.
If you are a redneck, we have cities you'd like, San Diego, Orange County,Bakersfield, the Central valley, Northern California.
If you are liberal, we have LA, SF, Berkeley, Marin.

And for all of you right-wingers, this is the state that gave you your hero, Ronald Reagan.

the attitude of most people from cali (i play paintball, so sick of hearing about socal and nocal and blah blah blah) makes me wish it would fall into the ocean.

California pros
------------
-Low property tax - Locked in 1% at time of purchase or 1977 appraisal value whichever comes later
-Ski, surf, and glamis dunes within 1 hours drive - do all three same day.
-Great economy and high tech - you could put me in any major city in Ca and within 5 years I'd be a millionaire - it's that hot
-Weather duh! 75-85 year round in many places.
-best schools in nation besides maybe ivy leagues.
-Property values seemingly ever increasing due to demand

Cons
-------
-Gun laws
-Taxes - lots of em
-Smog in some areas!!!! Just aweful in inland empire, I get ill going though there.
-Traffic in some areas!!!!!! Just unbearable dispite 8 lanes each direction 10, 405 etc.

Los Angeles is the ugliest of all cities and represents the worst of urban sprawl, concrete, no decent public transit, run down, superficial people, bandwagon jumpers, etc... and then there is Orange County, where half the population is middle aged SUV driving obnoxious Oprah watching women. Make your way up north, and you have Oakland (crap), Berkeley (CRAP), and more obnoxious middle aged Oprah watching women (fremont). Also, people here are extremely intolerant of any other viewpoints, there is no community feel, people are ignorant of anything else outside of the state (let alone, world), and somehow feel that their ignorance ties in with being enlightened. Oh, and the weather ain't exactly good- In LA, the smog is unbearable, and it is sweltering for about 9 months of the year, and decent beach temperature during the winter. SF ain't bad, and SD is definitely a bright spot. And then there is the illegal immigrants, dumb politicians who consistently find new ways to surprise us with their stupidity, and did I forget to mention obnoxious middle aged SUV driving women?

the first several posts in this thread are exactly why California is hated. I mean, please... jealous? That is so far from the truth it's pathetic. It's because you all think you are this shi* for who knows why.

Conversations with californians usually go like this:

california - "we have beaches and mountains"

me - "O RLY?"

california - "yeah, and we've cities that are big... bigger than your cities"

me - "NO WAI!"

california - "yeah, so we are way cooler than you, btw I just took this photo of myself and my buds last night right here... aren't we cute?"

me - "that's hawt" ( :disgust: )

Bwaa haa haa...

Seriously though. I think it's because you sell your houses for tons of cash then move to another state and outbid locals for housing. Which in turn pushes home prices ever higher until locals have to move out to the sticks to buy a house. Throw some condescending attitude on top of that and you have a recipe for hate/jealousy/anger or whatever emotion you want to tag on.
Thankfully, I got into housing early so the above doesn't really effect me but I have seen it happen to some friends and their common gripe was "fvckin' Californians...." blah blah blah.
Personally, I think you can insert any state in leiu of Cali and get the same response from locals anywhere.
So don't be hatin' 😉
