U2ForNow: I had a typo,

What I am trying to say is that the antec 300 watt power supply sux.... trust me i used to use it!!
What I did was buy the Channel well and cheiftec case from newegg, (btw the channel well power supply has GREAT specs..) I swapped the antec 300 watt out of my sx-830, for the channel well cwt420 that came with the chieftec case... ALL PROBLEMS FIXED...

I have an athlon 1.2 ghz @ 1.2 ghz but........
For your own information the antec power supply is only rated for the following....
Athlon 900
Athlon 850
Athlon 800
Athlon 750
Athlon 700
Athlon 650
Athlon 600

Decisions, decisions.

The 1030B at TCWO for $85 shipped, which includes two case fans.

Or...the Chieftech 1040 at Newegg for $92 shipped which moves from 300W PSU to 420W.

Best regards,
Floyd

I wish the Chieftech was black. Who wants a grey case? Not me... I'm dying to jump on this Antec case but I just don't think that 300W is going to cut it. How 'bout a P4 oc'd to about 2.4 ghz and not a ridiculous amount of extra drives? Think a 300W ps would drive that?

So what's the verdict on the PS? About how many devices will it power? Is it quiet? Is this a quiet case overall?

I am using the 300 watt power supply with all my pci slots full, cdrom drive, dvd drive, cdrw drive, zip drive, sb live platinum, two hardrives, 5 case fans, and lots of usb devices. Seems to work just fine for me. No problems at all.

I would have to agree that the newer (303XP) antec power supplies doesn't seem to be as good as the older ones, from a visual standpoint. My old 250 watt (253X retail BOX) one has a ball bearing fan the the newer one has sleeve. Its slightly quiet now, but eventually it won't last as long or be as quiet. Also it gets hotter without moving as much air out too. The construction of the power supply case also seems to be thinner and the metal less smooth. Maybe it all has nothing to do with the real job its suppose to do, but still makes me feel uneasy. I think the homepage says all products come with a 3 year warranty. There is no warranty infomation on the KS-282 I brought from Frys, or maybe just mine didn't come with it.

<< They seem to add tax too, which is another ~$5.00.

Still seems like a good deal though.

Are you in Florida? I am too and was charged tax as well. They are located in Tampa.

Is this case really black? Or what I read elsewhere "IBM black" (whatever that implies)? It seems from this ExtremeTech says it's more like charcoal gray despite the label of "black"?

I haven't seen one in person, but the new 1030sxb looks blacker than the old ones. All the pictures of the case with the grey/silver latch on the side look darker than the older version.

I ordered mine so I guess I'll find out :).

I'd say if your gonna fill this baby up with hard drives your gonna need a stronger power supply. I upgraded my Antec 300W to an Enermax 350W and my stability improved and my temps dropped. IMHO

Hi Schmaty:

___Nice deal and thanks!

___For everyone else, I am powering up a 1.6A @ 2.2 GHz using a P4B266 and the EZ-Plug with an Antec 250 in a Hydraulic w/ the side fan opening. Case temps are 86 degrees F using (1) PC Power & Cooling Silencer up front and an Enermax adjustable at ~ 1400 RPM in the side. I am receiving 4.93 V on the + 5 V rail as I type. The 303X should do fine w/ a P4 Northwood. The older Willy?s and of course T-Birds/XP +?s on the other hand would almost guaranteed kill this 250 W Antec. I had a 303X w/ a 1.4 GHz T-Bird OC?ed to 1.7 for a few weeks but it started to cook so it went back to a PIII.

___Good Luck

"1030sxb"??? I've never heard of those... How do you know which ones are the "1030sxb"? The only picture I've seen with the grey/silver latch on the side is the one on TWCO, but then, that one doesn't have an Antec sticker on it?

Ok, I meant sx1030b, so sue me. The "b" of course just means "black".

The real Antec on Newegg's site doesn't have an Antec sticker on it either, but it is the lighter "Antec black" and does have a black latch. If you follow this link to Buy.com you'll see the same case with the silver latch in what seems to be a darker black.

Like I said, I'll find out soon enough.

Jason

Jason,

Yeah, I saw some more pics with the silver latch on buy.com and some other European vendor sites. No sarcasm or offense meant by the "1030sxb?" I hope the darker one is the one we get cause the charcoal black ones are just not as sleek! :)
