PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ? A Philadelphia teenager celebrating his 16th birthday is fighting for his life after a senseless shooting over an errant snowball.

Authorities said the Feltonville teen, identified as Tavin Rutledge, was shot in the head at point-blank range while playing with neighborhood friends in the 4800 block of D Street.

Witnesses say the shooting was sparked from a casual snowball fight amongst children.

A friend of Tavin's, involved in the playful snowball fight, said the shooting happened after a wayward snowball accidentally struck a nearby neighbor. The girl tells CBS 3 another adult male witnessed the incident and became enraged.

Neighbors say Tavin apologized to the man, but, he left the scene and returned with a gun.

Family and friends celebrating Tavin's birthday heard gunshots and ran to his side.

"We ran outside and saw Tavin laying on the step," said the victim's friend Mercedes Lebron. "When I picked him up, smoke stared coming out of his head ? He still was breathing and we told him keep breathing, calm down."

Tavin was rushed to Temple University hospital where he was placed on life-support. As of Monday morning he remained in critical condition with his family be his side.

Everyone who knows Tavin is trying to cope with the senseless shooting. "It was just a snowball fight," said neighbor Catherine Briggs,

"They were outside having fun with snowballs and instead of hitting him back with a snowball, he came back and shot him with a gun," said neighbor Monica Albelo.

Philadelphia police detectives said they are actively searching for the gunman and are pursuing several good leads.

I don't see the connection here.

Not all parts are bad. On the whole though, I agree with you. There is definitely way too much violence here, the public transportation is expensive, and everything closes around 8pm. Just a few of the things I don't like. :p

I agree, nothing in the article implies gang/thug activity or how glorification of it caused this to happen. But I'm going to have to agree with Anubis here; it doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to see how the implication could have been drawn. I wouldn't be surprised (and I even think it's very, very likely) that the shooter fits the gang member/thug profile.

I think it's time they change their phrase until their crime rate says they an deserve it again.

As luv2liv said, that area where the kid was at is a real bad place to be.

Better yet, they can write the book on a bullet and shoot him in the head with it. It's a red hot knowledge injection straight to the source.

At least the police say they have some good leads. Wow. Just makes me sad and angry... a snowball fight on his 16th birthday and now he's in critical condition after being shot point-blank in the head by some reject.
