It seems that everyone loves marijauna so much, and that no one thinks you can get addicted (or that its not very addictive), and that it doesnt harm you at all.

So i am wondering, what are the side affects, and why is it bad?

a lot of people in my family (not immediate) smoke weed and a lot of my friends do, and i have noticed that most all of them seem to be suffering because of it, but they think they are not.

so id like some info about why its bad so i can maybe give a good argument to stop. otherwise, they think they are scientists and know so much about it and act like its the best thing theyve ever done for themselves.

The biggest harm (AFAIK) is the effect of the smoke on the lungs. It may or may not be as harmful as cigarette smoke.

soooooo is it affecting their every day lives? if yes then tell them so, if not then why do you care?

if they smoke they know it's harmful (or potentially harmful) and nothing you say is going to make them stop.

could you be more specific about their problems? How much do they smoke?

x2 The same is true for me. I used to smoke a lot. Have since cut it out basically completely. If a person has no ambitions, then weed will not significantly affect them. If a person actually wants to make something of themselves, then continuous weed smoking can pose a real problem, if nothing else for the likelihood of being tested for a higher-paying position.

I'll almost certainly smoke again someday. Maybe even with as much as weekly frequency, but for now I have too much going on to gamble with it. Being in sales, I never know when I might get call from a headhunter with the opportunity of a lifetime. I'd kill myself if something like that happened and I couldn't take the job because they were gonna test me and I had just smoked like a week ago.

From what I can see (I've only tried it once), it makes you somewhat apathetic, and academically lazy. Again, this is not a scientific observation, it is a case scenario.

The biggest side affect i get from it is gaining weight, I can eat the whole pantry when i get the munchies)

thing is, i smoke, i don't drink, and imo weed is alot safer then alcohol.

I come home from work, and all smoke a litle instead of having a cold beer.

EDIT- name that quote!
If it grows from the ground, it's probably okay.

If you smoke every day, you do gain a bit of weight and feel groggy sometimes, but it is not addictive. You might want it...but I want a bowl of soup, so am I addicted to soup? It isn't addictive.

Maybe your friend are just lame asses and are trying to be cool stoners or something. Kick them in the balls.

Not that it isn't cool to do. :-/

Do these friends and family members have addictive personalities? If so, then I think the effects that are commonly associated with heavy use become more pronounced.

I've always heard and read that the psychological addiction to it can be much more of a problem than the physical addiction.

Everyone's different though...

Unlike alcohol or many other drugs where DT's or overdose can take your life, there is no way to OD on weed and you will not suffer from DT's when you stop abruptly.

Downside:

- the smoke is bad for your lungs
- if you have stuff that needs to be done and it isn't getting done as result of smoking
- if frequent use keeps you from dealing with problems/responsibilities
- the day after smoking, some people feel they have lower energy

I went to the bathroom...and sometimes I do it SEVERAL TIMES A DAY....am I an addict?

NO. I like that stuff, so I do it/use it/etc. I like marijuana...so sometimes I do it.

It's called moderation. Alcohol isn't the problem, it's idiots who cannot control themselves. Potheads can be just as bad, it's just by luck that weed can't kill. So the argument really doesn't have any merit. The problem is PEOPLE ARE STUPID.

A computer forum on the internet is not the best place to find answers about weed. Here are a few very good places to start:

I used to smoke everyday, but lately I've slowed down quite a bit. I was in between jobs, and I can't spend the money I don't have on that. I honestly thought I would have craved it more, but I really didn't. I have smoked more cigarettes because of it, which I am not happy about (cough). Now that I have slowed down with it, I will note that my days are a bit clearer. I have always been aware of my surroundings and my responsibilities, but I can definitely notice a difference. At the same time, it has never been anywhere near the point that I would want to stop because of it. The times that I spend with my friends laughing, playing video games, watching a movie, or throwing a Frisbee in the park have all been the most memorable parts of my life, and all enhanced by marijuana.

I can honestly say that it didn't affect me academically at all. I never did my homework anyway, so when I went to college and didn't study, it wasn't because I smoked, it was because I hated doing it, although my mother would say otherwise...

Anyways, it affects everybody differently, just like, say beer, pork, shampoo, etc. My girlfriend usually does it and goes to sleep, while I can do just about anything after.

As a previous smoker of 10+ years.... What a waste of my time and brain cells.

I wish I could do it all over again... I wouldn't.

Why do anti marijuana proponents claim that marijuana is an addictive substance? That's an incredibly baseless statement.

I'm not going to say it is or isn't... But in my experience and those around me AND those I have helped in a rehab facility... It can be.
