If the coil gets too hot it can cause these compounds to break down into harmful substances. That's what the article is trying to convey. However what they are missing is the resistance of the coil, the wicking, the airflow, etc.
Watt density, wicking efficiency, and airflow determine how hot things get. If someone is concerned they can use a box mod with temperature control and a coil material (nickel/titanium/SS/etc.) and never have to worry about their puff consistency or getting a dry hit.
And yes as a (former) smoker of cigars, I agree that vaping is a far better alternative both health wise and environment wise. (that is in the case of the latter your clouds don't infiltrate everyone's furnishings and clothing making them smell worse than 100 year old canvas that was pissed on by 10 opossums!)
