I'm kind of bummed because I just backed out of buying this. I've been lusting after it for months, it's been discontinued, but I found a deal on one that some guy bought as a backup and never used. Basically I had buyer's remorse before buying. It was really hard sending the email saying I couldn't do it🙁

Well, I changed my mind and I'm getting it!🙂 I felt bad when I thought I was buying it, but today I felt bad when I thought I wasn't buying it too, so I figured if I'm going to feel bad either way I might as well have something to show for it, and I pulled the trigger! I should have it Friday or Saturday. I feel a lot better about it now that it's over, but of course I'll feel better still when I have the lens.

No, no IS, which is a slight bummer, but it's an older lens from a few years before IS. If it did have IS it would probably be pushing eight pounds. It's a monopod lens anyway, so IS isn't as important.

I just thought I would share a couple more shots taken with my new gear.
This is amazing. These are mating damselflies. This has got to be the most acrobatic sex imaginable. They can even fly around like this. I wish I could do that🙁 The male graps the female behind the head with special clasps at the tip of his abdomen. The female curves her abdomen up under the males thorax and is inseminated. They stay in this posture until the eggs are laid underwater. They can stay under for up to 30 minutes laying eggs. Damselflies don't live long as adults. The only point to their adult life is to reproduce and die. In the short time they have they do one of the most delicate dances the world has ever known. You could say that their whole being is poured into this single dance.
Another mating pair with a third pervert damselfly just kind of hanging around watching. He probably thinks he's going to get in some hot threesome action, but it just doesn't work that way.
The following shots were taken during the same shoot as the damselflies, but for them I used my EF 100-400mm IS lens along with my 1.4x teleconverter.
This is a little green heron. While it's not very little or green, it is smaller than other herons, roughly chicken sized, but much more slender and graceful. He was really cool about getting his picture taken. I watched him for probably a half hour or more while he went fishing. He let me get within about 15 yards or so.
Same bird different pose. I'm not sure what he was doing here, but he did it a couple of times. Maybe just keeping cool.

God dammit...I need new lenses. My Canon 75-300 4.0-5.6 III (non-USM) isn't cutting it. I'm convinced it is impossible to take a clear picture at anything faster than f/11. In addition, I shake too much, so IS is a must for the future.

You've got some nice shots on there. I've never used that lens, but I've heard things. Nikon just announced their 200-400mm f/4 lens, and it's been rumored that Canon has had one in the works for quite some time. If Canon releases theirs and it's all it's cracked up to be you can bet that the price of the 100-400mm IS will drop like a stone. It's a great lens, but it has a couple of quirks. Maybe that would be an option for you.

In macro photography depth of field is very shallow. To maximize this very small apertures are used. It's not uncommon for me to use f/64 for an extreme closeup. Because of this very little ambient light is evident in the photograph, but the subject is lit by the flash. This give the effect of a very dark or black background with the subject properly exposed. Not everyone is a fan of this effect, but I think it has its uses.
