Another 'once in a generation' weather event is coming

Well the sun started peaking through the clouds, as the temp has dropped to 35. Should be below freezing within the hour. May not be as icy on the roads as feared. But not interested in finding out the hard way.
 
Went out to shovel a bit, got more snow than I realized, it didn't look as bad from inside the house. 😛 I only did the part that's in front of the truck, I'll deal with rest tomorrow. I'm 2 beers in watching the rest of the storm as it seems to have started again. Lots of wind and blowing snow.

Not looking forward to cleaning up the plow snow bank when it passes, I think it's going to be a big one. Roads have a good 30cm of snow in them. I was laughing because someone on facebook was complaining that snow was ankle deep. Oh noes! Better make that street a priority lmao.

As a Brit I can't imagine a wave of 7m on a lake (yeah I know that they are BIG lakes).

Apparently Lake Erie in particular is susceptible to wave-patterns when the wind is from just the right/wrong direction leading to these waves.

And in yet another unexpected climate-change created problem ... normally by this time of year significant lake-ice would be acting as a "damper" to the surf.

it's great when lake erie finally freezes over because then the snowstorms tend to be not as bad

The term for it is "fetch", that is the distance that the wind can act on a body of water. When the direction is just wrong, really bad things can happen.
@brianmanahan I never considered the effects of ice on lake effect snow. That might prove to be a real ah heck.
 
Same climate-change issue totally applies to lake effect snow. 😕

I have friends from Buffalo and apparently the really heavy stuff USED to stop by early January most years due to that ice forming. Not anymore.
