its been pretty mild thus far NW of Chicago near IL/Wi border. temp was around 0 F when i went out to shovel a couple of hours ago. I feel badly for anybody who is unhoused or who has no access to heat. Being outside all night would get pretty uncomfortable!
 
It's 12:30 am 12/23, 42 degrees and light rain.

My forecast. It's been in the upper 40's for the past week.

Enough wood inside for the wood stoves for at least 4 days. This is to supplement the furnace (oil), and power outages, which is far too likely given the winds we are supposed to get.

The only other prep for the house is to open the cabinet under the kitchen sink, which is the only pluming on an outside wall. House was built in 1965, so insulation is lacking by today's standards.

Plans to go outside consist of short walks for the dog.

I'm a little further north on the lakeshore in WI, and this wind has been nasty tonight. Right now it's steady 30+ mph and gusting over 50.

I layered up and put on the gore-tex suit to go stomp around outside a little while ago just for shits and giggles, and to see how bad it was. It felt and looked like an arctic plain in the big open lot across the road from me. I was well-protected but I could tell it was nasty just from the air on my eyeballses (some of the only exposed/uncovered area.)

Storm starting to hit my area now, just lot of wind and some snow, but also seeing lot of power outages throughout the area we monitor. Glad it's my last shift but I do wonder if I'll end up being called in for OT. Can always use the extra money though!

The snow has started and the winds are blowing hard.

0C with windchill of -8C for now. Storm will deepen as the day goes on.

are expecting anywhere from 10 to 25 cm of snow today.
 
Special weather statements have turned into winter storm and blizzard watches and warnings across all of southern Ontario.


London-Middlesex, Elgin, Oxford and Sarnia-Lambton are under a winter storm warning while Huron-Perth and Grey-Bruce are under a blizzard warning.


The storm is expected to begin late Thursday as rainfall, before shifting to snowfall and strong winds on Friday and into Saturday.


According to Environment Canada, winds could gust upwards of 100 km/h creating widespread blowing snow with wind chill values in the minus 20s. Snowfall values of between 5 and 15 cm are expected by Saturday morning, and the sudden dropping of temperatures on Friday could lead to a flash freeze which leads to icy and slippery surfaces.


The weather authority is asking people to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions approve saying, “visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”

Not too bad here. Got about 1.5" of rain last night but my basement didn't get any water so I'm good.

Currently in the 50s, then dropping to the teens tonight and getting wind up to 50mph (not sure what that is in Canada-units).

Still wish it was snow... 🙁
 
Lots better. Cell restricts me to a dinky screen and very spotty service. With DSL I can use a real screen and keyboard and no data limits. 30 M service is fine for my use.
 
They shut down all transit, SeaTac airport has one runway open but most flights are cancelled. Seattle has 0.27" of ice, Shelton to the Southwest has 0.50" Currently it is a balmy 30 at our house, but they predict any rain as ice through mid day.
Snohomish PUD has 5400 customers out of service due to ice and high winds. This a great day to stay home 😀
 
well it's blowing snow now only -2C so not really freezing but with 74-88 kmh wind it's nuts.

Back in the day when weather reports were actually about reporting the weather accurately today in Connecticut was known as a "rainy day with light to moderate wind".

Further north/west it was known as "snow during winter" .... in other words it's about as exciting as darkness at night.

That was when the weather had to be covered in under three minutes each day. With 24 hour weather channels, they’ve got all that time between pharma commercials to fill.

I guess driving tips are in order for winter driving in the south.

1) Don’t
2) Okay, you ignored the first tip so we know you’re a true child of the south.
3) If you slide, no matter what, keep your foot pressed down on whichever pedal it was pushing when you started to slide. Push that pedal through the floor board until everything sorts itself out.
4) Table knives, dish towels, and salad tongs all work equally well for clearing snow and ice from the windshield.
 
47° here and raining pretty well. So the roads are going to be a shit show in about 4 hours when the temps drop fast to freezing here by New York.

Family get together got canceled, which I would not have gone to due to the hour drive and the weather. I'll be walking to the store to grab a six pack and the little farmers market to grab some goods to make a big pot of chicken soup today.

Chicken soup, two furry fuckers, battlefield 2042, probably read some of the third dune book, and maybe find something to stream later. Today is a holiday which means bump up the subwoofer during a movie.

No need to drive anywhere.

I feel bad for my aunt. She is driving from her home in the Chicago area to Sturgeon Bay this evening for the holidays (one of her sons lives up there, and Grandma lives there)
Hope the roads aren't too bad. At least my aunt got a newish Rav4 with decent headlights so she should have semi-ok visibility.

Grandma lives on the water, off of the bay, and it can get quite windy there! I sort of want to move up there so I can snowmobile a lot again and hang out with my cousin more.
