another noobish quesition

I can't see the following combination requiring more than a 400W power supply but maybe someone can school me on this:

Motherboard: SuperMicro MBD-X9SCM-F-O
CPU Xeon I3 1230 V2
32GB RAM
6 SATA drives (max)
Maybe a dvd or BR burner

No graphics are or constant use.

I have had people tell me I could get by with 550W but a 750W may be a better choice. It is not the money for the unit that is a big concern, it the waste of electricity over the long run (money and it is a waste) fan noise and heat.

SuperMicro is kind of skimpy on their specs but I have found that under a full load the CPU and board run at 120W (so maybe 150W max board draw).

I have only ever bought Antec PSUs sowas thinking and EA-380
So what do I need in this unit?

thanks so much.

You're right, 400W would be fine.

That said, 550W or 750W doesn't necessarily generate more heat or noise. It might actually be less noisy. PSUs only draw as much power as they need to run the computer, they don't automatically draw the wattage on the label.

As far as Antec, they have some good units and some not-so-good units. It depends on which company actually manufactured the PSU for Antec.

^Agree^

A good quality 400w psu such would be plenty, with head room to spare. However if you would ever consider adding a dedicated video card in the future, you may want to invest in a 550w.
