I spent the last few days visiting my parents, who live in a pretty well-to-do neighborhood in a nice suburban town. The area's really nice, but geez...the people...I grew up in this neighborhood, and I don't remember it as being so cold and well, bitchy.
The house neighboring our house on the backside (our backyards meet) used to be occupied by a nice family, with two kids I used to babysit for. When they got older, they came over to my house for piano lessons. I took care of their dog when they were out of town, they returned the favor, etc. That family doesn't live there anymore, apparently. Today my girlfriend and I were walking the family dog, took her to some nearby parks and whatnot. Since my parents live in a cul-de-sac, if you're in this neighborhood behind ours, you either cut through a yard to get back or walk about a 10 block circle to come around to the front again.
The old neighbors and ourselves always strolled through each other's backyards for the aforementioned reasons, and dogs were no exception. Well, as my girlfriend and I walked through the neighbor's yard to get back to ours, I saw the new resident in her yard (ironically cleaning up dog mess from her own pooch). I smiled said hello, which was returned with a frown and a rude, sharp "excuse me, please don't cut through our yard, this is private property." I calmly, still smiling, told her we were her next door neighbors and extended my hand for an introductory handshake. Rather than return it, she shrugged it off and grilled me on why she had never seen me or my dog before. I shrugged and politely informed her that my family and I have been in that house for 20 years (before her house was even built, mind you). She scolded "well....it's still private property." and stalked off.
Is she technically right? Of course! It's her property, and she can disallow whomever she chooses from setting foot on it. But what the fuck? Who meets their next door neighbor for the first time, and begins with an accusation of lying and "get off my property"? I don't think she even had a problem with our dog, as it was well behaved and she has two of her own. She just didn't want us, her neighbors, to set foot on her grass.
Sigh...makes me think of this song: Text
