I normally diet down a bit to get ripped for summer. This summer my goal was to get as big and muscular as possible. I wanted to see if I could get to 260lbs. I was 234lbs 6 weeks ago. 247lbs last Monday. Only 13 pounds away. I can pinch about 1" around my navel, thus I'm still relatively lean for my bodyweight.

God job on the weightloss though.

??? you talking about you put on 13lbs of 'muscle' in 6 weeks? and planning on adding another 13 within a month or two?

Even with anabolic steroids 26 lbs of muscle in a year for someone working out regularly prior to taking it is rare.

Heh. Agreed. What are you eating?? LOL

Oh, my! What a difference today makes!

Congrats!

You do look mean with your new facial look, though. A smile as suggested by others would be helpful so all the chicks don't get scared of you. 😛

Wow! I'm proud of some AT guys. It's nice to know that someone posting about his experience has been a motivation for someone else on the forum. Be proud of yourselves. It's really cool to see something positive from AT and its members. Now, I hope you all maintain that new look. Maintenance is always the hardest part.

The eating small meals is really true. I mean, I have a natural tendency toward lankiness. However, if I eat too much (i.e., the type and quantity of food the average American eats), I would gradually gain weight and get to the level I wouldn't like. So try the concept of moderation, but don't starve yourself. Just eat enough to fill your belly, then go back hours later when and only if you're hungry. Drink water frequently, but not excessively.

Congratulations again to the original poster. You may want to change your nick from badluck (perhaps to goodluck), though. 😉

Check this out: "The Carb Question".

I so agree with this article. When I was little, my diet consisted of little carb with mostly protein, and I was skinny. However, now I'm adult and my diet has a lot of carb, but I'm still skinny. What happens is, I eat in moderation. Moderation is the key thing. Yes, certain foods carry more calories, so it's easier to obtain so much calories with the same weight as say a protein based food. However, if you eat carb in moderation, you'll be fine.

[BD2000:] "Does eating the 5 small meals a day really make such a big difference? Ive never done it and lost weight fine."

I don't think it does. The idea is simply to eat in moderation. I think sometimes using the word "small" [meals] is misleading. It gives the impression that one should starve oneself. That isn't my idea at least. The amount varies for each persons, since we all have different body builds. "Small" is not an independent event, for it's relative. The idea is to eat enough to fill your tummy to the point of not feeling hungry at that moment, but not excessively. Then if and when you're hungry again, you go and eat again enough to end that hunger at that moment, but not exceeding what your belly demands. So 5 may make a difference for one person but may not for you. Test your body and endurance. Sometimes, for instance, I could eat anything from 7-15 times in a day (this includes snacking). This is usually during my time of the month. I eat in small quantity but very often in a day. Nevertheless, when I am off my time of the month, I eat maximum three times in a day, but once-twice a day on average.

wow....props man, you deserve a commercial or something. Congratulations, and good luck on staying strong and reaching your goal!

What is with you about 40x30 pants? 40 inches ain't really that big.....

You must be a stick.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. A guy that weighs 280 pounds is probably wearing 44x30 pants.

Evilyoda, jjsole: Thanks for the comments!! I really appreciate it....

I wore 40x30 when I was at 280....But, I was definately going upward to 42x30.....ugghhhh.... 🙂

f. Don't be embarrassed about getting in the gym if you are overweight. I was, and it almost made me walk right out. Work through it. People respect a fat guy in the gym more than a fat guy at home doing nothing.

so very true
im a skinny bastard and i felt the same way going in to lift weights when im sitting there starting out benching like the bar plus 10 on each side i felt soooooo stupid but i figure everyone starts some where and learned its more respected if your in the gym trying to improve (losing weight or gaining muscle) than if your not so i learn not to care even if i can only bench 85lbs right now 😛

(though i love shrugs cuz i can do 250 on those ....... cuz it sounds like alot even though it isn't)

I don't think it matters... I've lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks when only eating twice a day...

of course I eat in moderation at dinner and supper...

Paulson, you can run your diet any way you'd like. But it's in your own best interest to do the research with an open mind. You won't find any credible source which advises going 15-20 hours between meals. Think about the long term.

The first few weeks are rather irrelevant in the big picture. Weight comes off very quickly and very easily in the first few weeks, especially since a good portion of it is water loss. As your metabolism adjusts and stabilizes, your weight loss *should* slow down. Which is actually a very good thing for long term success. Those who lose weight very quickly are the ones who gain it back just as quick.

Take a look at my weight chart, as an example. When I think about my rate of weight loss, I don't even take the first two weeks into consideration.

After all of the reading and prep I did to start my diet, I never read one thing that said eat 2 times a day. Bump for some good advice by Wingznut. He summed it up well.

So, don't eat 6 times a day... But it's just not beneficial to go ~17 hours between meals.

well does snacking a little here and there count as meals to keep the metabolism going?

if that's all it takes is snacking in moderation I can do that.

Paulson, trust me, just follow what your body, not brain, demands. Eat whenever you're hungry. Don't eat when you're not hungry. If you have a craving, then try drinking water.

There's no set rule for number of times to eat, except if you choose to buy into three full square meals or 5 small meals crap. As I said earlier, "small" is relative. Your body build I'm sure is not the same as mine, for instance. For me, 1/3 of a full square meal satisfies me for that moment. Then about 6 hrs later I'm set for another. Sometimes I don't even need to eat at all, except I might snack and drink water. I could even eat just peanut butter with two slices of bread about three times in a day, drink water and I'm done for the day. On the other hand, I could eat 1/3 or 1/4 of a full square meal in the morning then about 3 hrs later I have another one, then I snack two hours later, then another 1/3, etc. As I said though, that's when it's my time of the month. You're a guy, so you wouldn't face the PMSing experience. 😛

Anyway, I'm still healthy and in shape, mind you and it's been how I eat for ages now. 😛 It's crap for anyone to tell you how many times is appropriate to eat or when to eat. (What they can tell you is not to starve yourself or eat excessively.) For instance people tell me this crap about eating at midnight or past 9 PM, but I get up anytime I'm hungry, be it 12 AM, and eat. What you should take into consideration is how much you eat at one time. And trust me, I'm no longer a teenager. I was told it was all 'cuz I was a teenager but when I got older my body wouldn't take it anymore. Always keep moderation in mind. Don't eat 5 times in a day just to fulfill the words of a dietitian even though you aren't hungry. And don't eat "small" that keeps you hungry at that very time just to please a dietitian or anyone's perception of "small". Eat enough to satisfy your hunger, but not overtop it. And don't let your brain trick you into eating when your body isn't demanding it. All right, excuse me whilst I go eat my first meal today, since my body is calling for food. 😛

No offense, but you are dishing out (some) bad advice, in my opinion. There are studies that have shown that people who eat six meals a day lose more weight than those who eat two meals a day. Not only do they lose more pounds of fat, they have also found that you lose less muscle as a result of eating more frequently.

I do agree that it is okay to eat something later at night, but it depends what it is. For instance, cottage cheese ( or peanut butter) would be okay to eat before bed. It is a casien protein, (slow digesting) so your body wont go all catatonic and keep your body fueled longer into the night. There is a difference between eating cottage cheese late at night, and eating tons of bread late at night. If you are serious about losing weight, that is.

This seems more complicated then my workout :S

I mean yesterday I burned 1678 calories... that's not going to help me lose weight or what (i mean it was 125 minutes of cardio workout)

I quit drinking pop, drink lots of water, and cut my porportions down in food.. I don't always eat when I'm hungry, because whenever i watch tv I magically get hungry (it's a mental thing, I'm not really hungry)...

Who knows, sometimes it's even more depressing to try to do what's right for your body then just letting it go to hell :|

Badluck, let me clarify something: I think people have a misconception of what works and doesn't. Of course 6 meals of the same calories as 2 meals a day would be more effective in losing weight. But what I was saying was that, if two meals were equivalent to say 1/2 of set 6 meals, the person who ate twice only 'cuz he (or she) was hungry at those moments and not excessively would be just as effective if nor more effective than someone who felt the need to have 6 meals. Secondly, if it meant eating little but feeling hungry at that moment, then it isn't healthy for you. It may work to help you lose weight immediately, but if it persists you'll be sick and at some point your body will be storing the little it gets fed with for fear of famine. 6 meals may be perfect for some, but two is perfect for the others. (In case you don't know I'm 6' 1" and 135 Lbs. As I said, sometimes I just have one meal, other times two meals, but not even up to one full square meal, whilst other times I eat anything from 7-15 times--with snacking included.)

definitely inspirational - man... i've been wanting to lose weight for a long time alrady... just don't have the discipline to maintain it...

While it is true 6 meals are more proper than 2 for MOST people, the studies are based on people eating 6 proper meals and the people that eat only 2 are overeating.

2 is not the best way to do it if you want to protect your muscle, it does work for many, many people to lose weight that know what they 'need' to eat and what they don't.
