We were loved in Iraq when we first came in, once people really believed that Saddam was overthrown. Then people realized that their lives still sucked. We had a great war plan (thanks, Tommy Franks!) but virtually no sensible planning for the occupation.

It would be worse in Iran because Saddam was an overt dictator. No one wanted him unless it was for personal gain. Iran is somewhat different. Although the leadership isn't loved, that's mostly younger people. The elders somewhat accept and indeed embrace them. What Iranians universally would dislike is us solving their problems for them at the point of a gun. That would solidify the entire nation against us and that would be bad.

Agreed, invading Iran would be a monumentally bad idea.

And how precisely do you envision us getting Iran? A land based war isn't practical, there isn't a strong sentiment for raising a army of two million fighting men. If we did we could defeat their military and then what? Iran can't be ruled, civil unrest would make taking resources impossible. Trillions of dollars and nothing to show for it. Even Bush wasn't that stupid.

I didn't say that we should attack Iran but that's what will happen with obama or Romney. Both of them have made it clear they want to attack Iran especially if Israel is at risk(they aren't).

There spreading the same propaganda about Iran as they did with Iraq and people are believing it. The reason they pulled out of Iraq was they needed troops for Iran and they can lie to the American people that Iran poses a threat.

Assume you wish to attack a stronghold. You need one hundred fighters. You make a fuss as to how important it is to do so. You have the opportunity to attack. You have 20 men and that's all you can realistically get.

Go.
