I'd find out the assclown that ruined this for everyone. Chances are someone sued for not being able to 'take their breaks'.

It's equally possible someone is suing for being hurt while 'having to leave the building' for their break.

People are stupid.

So my workplace will be enforcing new rules for our 15 minute breaks and it sucks.

1. The 2 15 minute breaks we get cannot be combined into a 30 minute one, they must be taken 15 minute in the morning, and 15 minute in the afternoon.

2. We cannot leave the building during our 15 minute break.

Sucks.

Mistake I thought this was OT.

Those are typically in line with laws passed by your state that regulate employees' rights.

The not leaving work thing is a liability issue, as you're on the clock and therefore your employer is liable for your wellbeing.

Despite the fact that a lot of people are acting like dicks in this thread, I'm with you and think it's bullcrap and sucks balls. My last job was like that and it was insufferable. I started looking for a new job the minute I found out how they ran things. Now I make way more money in a job environment that is amazing. I also know for a fact that my previous employer has gone through 4 people doing the exact job I was doing since I left (only 7 months ago). And this was for a high ranked well payed IT job. Do yourself a favor and don't put up with the ridiculous bullcrap.

Companies often hire some outside watchdog to make sure all the laws are being followed. All the T's crossed, all the i's dotted. Amazing the lawsuits wronged employees can and will bring against an employer. Especially those predator employees that know how to play the game. Know the tricks. Collect on lawsuits. Very costly to an unsuspecting company. I suspect cracking down on break rules was just a small part of the changes suggested by the outside auditors, or to be suggested in the near future. This outside auditor thing has been big business, actually, since 9/11 took place.
We were pissed when changes happened at our company. Now, we all have to keep our pants on. Just not fair...

A legal centered HR department is being run by people without humanistic values: you can rest-assured that this is just one manifestation the cancer that grows within this organization.

Jump ship.

I actually think it's in response to this:

http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_20381344/workers-have-right-breaks-but-bosses-dont-have

Under the old rules, if you worked through your mandated coffee break, you could claim overtime for it. Many times, I got an extra half hour of OT for working through my coffee break...IF we couldn't stop and take the break shortly after the designated time.
Under the new rules, it's up to the employee to take his break...not up to the employer to make him take the break.

Surprisingly liberal Commiefornia is going the other way. It was just ruled last month that employers do not have to force employees to take a lunch if they do not want to.

Dude...he IS in California...and works for the state.

Of course, now that businesses are no longer required to "force" an employee to take his/her coffee or lunch break, they'd never think of abusing that...

And it isn't like you are free to find a job you like better if you feel like you are being mistreated.

I don't think he works at an Apple or Foxconn plant ;)

People with elite jobs don't have this trouble. Engineers, scientists, professors, lawyers, doctors... the elite get treated with some fing respect.

I made more money at Hynix but they treated employees horribly. Tektronix was very good to me.

Overall I like money but if the job is too stressful or abusive, I wont appreciate it.

Some lawyers will make a lot less than auto-workers; But the auto-worker isn't "elite" and thus doesn't have agency in his job-role.

I have never had a job with such rigidly defined "breaks" and I don't think I ever will. If you are getting your work done, it shouldn't matter what kind of schedule you keep.

Now I see why they are enforcing the rule...

I worked for a company that started to enforce rigid breaks. This is why they did it. When people take breaks at random times, it's hard to keep track of when they started or stopped taking a break.

My boss has strict rules. If you show up late, you must leave early.

We are treated as the professionals we are though. If we show up a little late some days (I get there sometimes 30 minutes late), we either stay a bit later that day or we dont. Work knows they will get it out of us some way or another. I'm oncall 24x7, either primary or secondary, so I get woken up regularly and have to put in some times on weekends. I'm salaried so it comes with the job.

But really, why does it matter. If they aren't getting their work done, it will quickly manifest itself either by people complaining, or shoddy workmanship that was rushed. I'm 100% completely for working by the job, not by the hour.

Free water?
Free Coffee?
Free toilet paper (soft not sandpaper)?

They could at least do that much for making work conditions bad.

I knew a guy who took 8 to10 smoking breaks a day at 10-15 minutes each. he used to eat his lunch at his desk and tell everyone that he's such a hard worker and never takes lunch breaks. :\

His productivity might still be higher than yours. I know that I feel a lot better if I walk up and down the stairs every few hours.
