Ann Romney's biggest concern if Mitt becomes president? Shocking answer inside...

(CBS News) Ann Romney's biggest concern if her husband becomes president would be his ability to maintain his "mental well-being," she said in an interview Thursday with KTVN in Reno, Nev.

Asked what her primary worry would be should her husband succeed in defeating President Obama on Nov. 6, Mrs. Romney replied, "You know, I think my biggest concern, obviously, would just be for his mental well-being."

"I have all the confidence in the world in his ability, in his decisiveness and his leadership skills, in his understanding of the economy, in his understanding of what's missing right now in the economy - you know, pieces that are missing to get this jumpstarted," she continued. "So for me I think it would just be the emotional part of it."

In a speech at Bartley Ranch in Reno earlier in the day, Mrs. Romney defended her husband. Criticism that the Republican presidential nominee is unrelatable, she said, is "off base." Mitt Romney has faced a difficult few weeks in the campaign that culminated in a leaked fundraiser video capturing him saying 47 percent of Americans depend on the government and consider themselves "victims."

Mrs. Romney told KTVN she hasn't been a part of debate preparations, as she and her family members have been campaigning separately. She also revealed that she had "minor surgery on her right hand" last week to remove a small cyst.

The president is the commander in chief, arguably the most powerful man in the world. He has access to thousands of nukes. He is the face of America when it comes to foreign affairs.

And we have to worry about Mitt's MENTAL WELL BEING if he's elected to president? If he was unfit to be president during this campaign, you'd have to be CRAZY to declare him fit right now.

Given the stress and responsibility that the POTUS had, any wife should be concerned on the effect that it can have on ones health.

I would have to agree. Every President has his hair go mostly grey, I don't think that is a coincidence.

It is a 24/7 job, with huge responsibility. Anyone would be worried about mental health dealing with that stress.

I am not seeing the issue, at all, with what she said. I can't begin to comprehend the stress and mental baggage that would come with the job.

Not necessarily, Bush famously didn't work very many hours.

However, i think Ann should know enough whether or not Mitt would be able to handle the job or not, if she has concerns, then that's a good enough answer.

That's true.

On the other hand, this is yet another area where Obama and Romney contrast. The former is pretty much unflappable, and the latter.. is not. People don't worry about Obama handling the pressure of the job, both because he's done it for four years, and because he showed his mental stability even before elected. People do worry about Romney, because he's untested, and because his behavior during the campaign shows he's "weak to the curveball".

This is going to be one of Romney's biggest challenges during the debates.

This, much like the attacks on Obama for golfing, is just false. They are never off the job no matter where they are or what they are doing. It comes with them every step of every day.

She was stating the obvious... You have to worry about any president's mental well being, unless it's an idiot like GWB who put zero thought into his decisions. It's just a gaffe

Not to worry, if Mitt becomes President he can play golf several times a week to help relieve stress.

Various ways to interpret what she said. OP interprets as she thinks his well being is fragile and this will make it worse. I interpret as it's a sh*t job and stressful.

It's moot anyway, Romney has no chance of office.

I think when you're narrowing the candidates to 2 who will be the most powerful man in the world, there really shouldn't be any question as to whether or not they can handle the stress. If there is, then they shouldn't even make it out of the vetting process (the primaries).

There is no question that Obama is the type that doesn't crack under pressure. There is PLENTY of evidence that Mitt is, given the completely erratic nature of his campaign.

This is a pretty obvious nitpick.

My dad works a lot of hours at his job and I worry about his mental health because of the stress he endures. That doesn't mean I feel he is unfit to perform his job.

Your dad probably doesn't have access to nukes and is the leader of the free world.

I think that question is always there. It's just a matter of whether people are willing to be honest about it or not.

There is PLENTY of evidence that Mitt is, given the completely erratic nature of his campaign.

How is that evidence of him being unable to mentally handle the job? I mean, the campaign is a mess, but that doesn't imply what you're saying.

I'll remind you that the guy has been a CEO, run an Olympics, and governed a state. Not the same as president, but hardly a toll-booth worker.

No but he could cost his company millions with a couple small errors.

There are plenty of other things to pick on Romney about or reasons that he's shown he wouldn't be a good president. His wife worrying about the strain the job will put on her husband isn't one of them.

The stress of being President pales in comparison to figuring out on which side of an issue to stand for each speech.

Agree, thread fail. I'm no fan of the Romneys as candidates, but a wife being worried about her husband's well-being is perfectly normal.

I'm sure the stress of being the president, and how it will affect their family, weighed heavily on Michelle's mind:

"She was worried, in part, about the impact on her family. But she also had concerns that it may not be the right time," Kantor says. "Her chief of staff told me that during that time, the decision just weighed on Michelle Obama — because she really believed that her husband could accomplish great things as president, but she wasn't sure if it was the best thing for their family. And how do you make that choice between what is best for you personally versus the contribution you think you can make to the country?"

This is the only logical, intelligent way to interpret what she said. Anyone saying otherwise is lying, trolling, or wrong.
