Good!

Disney stole the Lion King from an old 60's anime, whats that say eh?
Uh, considering that Shakespeare wrote it long before the 1960's I don't think that Disney copied it from anime. The Lion King is based on Hamlet.

Anyways, I think Anime wins by brute force. There are some pretty decent US cartoons, just not as many.

for me, anime is more realistic and does not insult kid's intelligence
my first anime was Akira and i was impressed
my next was princess mononoke and grave of the fireflies castle in the sky, spirited away, totoro, kiki's delivery service, etc and from there the rest is history
i appreciate american cartoons but they really are of a different base
for depth, creativity and enjoyment by all ages, anime is my choice
from there i have gone into romance of the three kingdoms, monkey king and on and on
chinese and japanese lit is astounding and much more interesting because the good guys and the bad guys are all the same not like Disney's perverted fairy tales that are anything but interesting and entertaining when compared to anime
besides, Disney has screwed the anime industry and the anime people by lying to us when they say they will release the latest Japanese movie that they bought
Disney needs to be brought down several notches because they copy and steal other people's ideas and work
just ask the people across the ocean

Anecdotal evidence (note that there are no sources cited for the quotations he puts into other people's mouths) from a pissed off obsessive geek? The "coincidences" seem to be nothing more than the fact that since both were about African animals they both had african animals in them and depected african settings. The parallels between The Lion King and Hamlet are far more documented and, gasp, include citations and sources and methods of verifying their claims.

The "striking" coincidence of the appearances in the clouds doesn't hold any water at all, ancestors appearing in the clouds/sky is a common visual, I've seen it in numerous other anime (a use in InuYasha comes to mind right now). Unless the guy wants to claim that it was never used before the Kimba and that everyone else who has used it is copying it, his claim in that instance doesn't hold water.

You must understand that there is more adult-oriented anime than there are adult-oriented american cartoons.

And I say american, simply because I hate anime.

The cartoon pinnacle was achieved with the creation of Scooby Doo. After that it's been all down hill. And if I want a story, I'll stick to movies.

<---- Admittedly hates anime with a passion

Well i think that both have their good side, and bad side. american cartoons, look at GI Joe, He-man, the smurfs, the Flinstons( anything by hana-barbara), Looney Tunes. Those are house hold names. Anime is not to that level yet. It is not mainstream enough for Disney to worry, Disney will continue to put out movies and make bucket loads of cash off of it because that's what sells. Simple stories that everyone can follow. Not a complex overly complicated story that can get confusing due to crappy translations.

I like Japanese cartoons and American. The problem i have with the anime craze is that 99% of it is forgetible and to much the same.

I like Macross stuff(not macross 7), Princess Mononoke', Spirited Away, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Wings of Hommenaise(sp?) and that's about it.

As far as american cartoons, I like GI Joe, Stuff by Ralph Bakshi and Don Bluth. If you want to see smooth realistic animation, look at theses guys work.

No way american cartoons can compare with anime. American cartoons are just the same storyline over and over again. It's pretty repetitive and boring.

Sure, one individual similarity on it's own doesn't make it a rip-off, but 10+? Perhaps you forgot a group of Japanese animators sued Disney and the lawsuit was settled out of court, the Kimba/Simba controversy is hardly just the ranting of a "pissed off obsessive geek" as you put it.

yeah, i'm pretty pissed off at anime animation and character design these days. everything's usually so meh and generic, i prefer the older style stuff from when they still drew stuff by hand. heh. call me old fashioned. :p
