Anime fan vs. Star Trek fan

Besides Star Wars, which is pretty much accepted by society, I believe those are the two laggest geek fan communities with
cult like followings (conventions, collecting, etc..)

Neither is too accepted by mainstream society

Which one is more socially crippling ?

I'd say being a Star Trek fan is more crippling, simply because there are many people who have no idea what Anime is or how truly geeky it is.

Accepted? Honestly I don't find Star Wars fans particularly any better off. Especially people who take Jedi seriously as a religion. Dressing up is a bit much too.

Dude, how much did the last Star Wars movie gross vs. the last Star Trek movie ?

I'm not saying one is better ... just that one (Star Wars) is more popular mainstream

i like both, and from my personal experiences publicly admitting to liking anime has been worse
My guess is since Star Trek geeks have been around for so much longer, the general public can appreciate that they have stood the test of time
Plus, not only is anime fiction, it's also a cartoon

i dont think that's entirely accurate (now keep in mind that i dont know one way or another)
Saying that star wars is more popular just because more ppl watched the movie isnt the best way to evaluate things. Star trek fans not only have movies, but most importantly there is the TV series, which gives most people their fill of star trek. Star wars on the other hand has ONLY movies.
-- my 2 cents -- 😉

I'd have to say Anime. Star Trek promotes diversity, acceptance, diplomacy, teamwork, and community. What does Anime do? Promote violence?
Anime is just a term for the Japanese style of cartoon drawing, AFAIK. What do American cartoons promote?

Ordering goods from ACME to kill a roadrunner?

Anime has a subgenre of porn. I would like for anyone to try explaining to a girl that they like watching cartoon porn.

There is no Star Trek porn.

Thus, Star Trek FTW.

being a 'fan' or 'nerd' of either is not socially crippling. Being one of those guys in spock or sailor moon costumes, THAT is socially crippling.

Exactly. Anyone who takes something a little too seriously is crippling to society. Similar to people who jerk off to Firefox and new episodes of Lost. They deserve to have their house burn down in the middle of the night as badly as crazy fans of anime and star trek.

Yes and no. I think that you can be as rabid a fan as you wish, as long as you stay within your given subculture. As soon as you interact with the real world, you should be expected to function in a milder manner.
