I ponder the point of this question in the first place. How exactly are either "socially crippling"? It's ones own choice to actually associate with the people and they dont exactly go imposing their ways on you. If you dont like it then fvck off and leave them alone. They are just doing what they want to do. And it has no repurcussions if they are keeping to themselves. I am a big fan of anime, I wouldn't ever cosplay, and I like ST:TNG, but would never dress as a character. Heck I even like normal and ecchi furry art. Overall, I like anime more. I think it is stereotypical to consider anime as "tentacle porn, robots, and as a cartoon". "Tentacle porn" is simply a small fetish of hentai anime. And why do people think that anime is only hentai? As for robots, there are several, several series including that, but once again there is an even greater amount that has nothing to do with robots. As for a cartoon, there would be nothing wrong with assigning it that term if it wasn't for the fact that "cartoons" in most people's minds are bugs bunny and stuff like that. Anime does have wierd slapstick stuff like that (Such as Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh, Green Green, and Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade.) There are cutsy animes (Sugar: The Little Snow Fairy, Pita Ten, and Tokyo Mew Mew) But alot of anime is mature themed with points just as serious as "real-life" series (Mahoromatic and Full Metal Alchemist) And there are the very mature animes (Elfen Lied, the Japanese version of Rurouni Kension, and Berserk) all of which drive home an important point. The reason I suppose I have always liked anime better is due to the fact that there is something for every mood. But some people simply dont see it as a viable form of entertainment. I personally never found an interest in Start Trek except for The Next Generation. But I would find neither socially crippling. I just dont know why such stereotypical images are applied to both Star Trek fans and anime fans (I.E. Star Trek = costume conventions, and Kirk vs. Piccard debates and Anime = cosplayers with an infatuation with 12 year olds in school uniforms).
