I have a feeling that for this to be totally understood we have to see all the episodes as well as the DVD they are planning on releasing. Keep in mind that this is only one of seven episodes and the ones online have got to be shorter than the four exclusive DVD ones. Also the Enter the Matrix game is supposed to be integral to understanding the complete story. The makers of the Matrix really know what they are doing because they have tied all of their promotions together. So all us Matrix nuts out there have to actually buy or rent their productions so that we get the whole experiece. Smart businessmen and darn good movies.

Reloaded, the Animatrix, and Enter the Matrix all tie in together. There're going to be scenes in the game that pick up straight from scenes in the movie (and vice versa), while the Animatrix covers the story from the past to the present (Matrix timeline, of course). Both the game and the Animatrix also expand on concepts outlined in the movies, such as hacking into the Matrix, finding and freeing minds, training, etc.

You can just watch the movies (not Reloaded and Revolutions... Reloaded will end with a massive cliffhanger that'll require you to watch Revolutions, and you're almost certainly not going to understand any of what's going to happen in Revolutions unless you've seen Reloaded), or the Animatrix, or play the game, but the Wachowski's do intend for it all to be part of a whole, and as Illini2003 said, to get the whole experience, you'll need to see/play everything.

Probably the single most ambitious and massive attempt at telling a story conceived to date, but if the follow-ups deliver on the promise of the first movie... it's going to be the most incredible and talked-about (and copied) thing for years to come.

What the hell happened in that short? She seems to be in some sort of romantic relationship with the traitor in the simulator, and then the guy who unplugs her says, "It was just a test SIS." I think he says sis. It's just not making sense to me.

I have to say the first one was way better in terms of animation and story.
Program's animation was fine part of the time, but when it came to the mouth movements for actual dialogue,
they were way off.

Anyone having any trouble opening the d/l? I keep on getting "Doesn't appear to be a valid archive". I must be missing the obvious here....

Aren't they going to show this in the movie theater too during Dreamcatcher?

Maybe they were meant to fit the Japanese language.

They're not going to let you download the one they are airing before Dreamcatcher. I just saw it tonight and it was awesome!! Just put the gorgeous animation of Square (Final Fantasy The Movie) with a Matrix story and you have one helluva 10 minute or so ride.

Can't wait for the DVDs.

That's because the audio track loses sync with the video track in long Quicktime movies... which is what happens in all of the Animatrix videos.

It's due to their encoding, NOT the original animation and audio dubbing.
