Hi, anyone here know what should I use to relief pain from angular cheilitis and accelerate its healing? I currently use Carmex.

Are they cold sores or canker sores? Cold sores are typically outside of your mouth while canker sores are within (on the tongue, cheek, gums).

Outside, it is around the corner of my lip and the area between nose and lip.

There are things like Abreva that help. They're outrageously expensive though. They're the only thing that gets my girlfriend's cold sores to go away though so she has to pay the $15 for a tiny tube.

When yuo say lysine do you mean the pills or the ointment?

either or. both have pros and cons, but ultimately will get you over cold sores faster... personally, i'd go with pill.

pill:
pro - systemic distribution, giving you protection against more than just the cold sore
con - not specific

ointment:
pro - specific, which may work faster than the pill (i don't know)
con - not systemic, so it can't be distributed throughout your body to help boost your immune system against viruses

just get it from a pharmacy or grocery store or something. shipping takes time and, honestly, when was the last time you paid too much and felt the effects of paying a few bucks extra a week later?

To answer the original question, use the red box blistex(medicated) for relief. The tube should be white with a red stripe on it. To answer the second question, try BJ's. If you have them frequently, they are larger tubes and more tubes at a time, I don't remember the price because I moved to prescriptions but it was much cheaper.

When you say cold sores, do you mean:
Large cracks on your lips(dried lips)?
Canker sores(sore spots inside your mouth, that could be on your lips)?
Herpes Simplex type I or II(Looks like a bunch of little pimples clustered together on a lip or oriface)?

All three can be treated with Blistex for pain on the lips. If it's the last, do not touch the tip of the tube to your sores. Put what you think you will need on a finger and put as much of it directly on the sore, without touching the blister with your finger if you can avoid it.

I will put a little rant here, because I didn't have anyone say anything to me at first, and I am lucky it did not spread, nor have I passed it on to anyone else.

If your new to having them, or have not been to a doctor, please read on. Herpes simplex can be spread to any orifice on the human body. Mouth, eyes, privates, etc. All of the creams on the market try to dry out the sore to make it inhospitable for the virus to replicate. Try your best to not pop the pimples. I cannot stress enough how important it is to thoroughly wash your hands with antibacterial soap anytime you touch the sore itself(I believe hospitals do a 2 min hand scrub before surgery). Do not scratch your nether regions afterwards until your hands are dry. You do not want that sh!t on your parts!!! For a dude, it might not be so bad as your parts can get air which gets rid of the moisture. Give it to your girl, and she will have a much worse time with it down there, and possibly pass it on to children during childbirth, which can cause many problems.

For actual cold sores, you want scripts, and you need to go to your doctor for an initial assessment to get them. It is more expensive the first time, however after you have the scripts the first time, you can just call the MD's office and have them call in refills to your pharmacy afterwards. My last refill cost $9.19. The initial co-pay might run you ~20-30. -if you don't have insurance, see if there is a local clinic/on-call service center - might run you $50 for the assessment. If you go in with one, they can just look at it, if not they need to do a blood test which might cost more.

-ask for Valtrex, might get Valacyclovir HCL(a generic that recently became available - this is good because it is the same thing, only much cheaper) ~5-15 co-pay

-ask for Zovirax, a generic cream like Abreva only much stronger. I like this because it does not leave the ashy scabs that Abreva does . Use hand washing precautions mentioned before with this cream. ~5-15 co-pay

- a soon as you feel the very first tingle, take 2gms of Valtrex, and drink a large glass of OJ. 12hrs later, take 1gm. The pills usually come in 500mg, so the first time will take 4 pills, and the second time take 2 pills. If you still feel a tingle after that(give it 12hrs), your body must be down and out and can't keep up. So get some rest and take 1gm more, - if you miss that first tingle or don't have Valtrex available at the time, cake on some Blistex.

- if you want to be proactive, ask your doctor for an everyday dose of 500mg.

Outbreaks will occur less and less as time goes on, and will happen when you get run down, sick, or when your body can't fight it. Keep good general health, take your vitamins, get good rest, and plenty of vitamin C and water. Which is usually suggested to stay healthy anyways.

I used to take just one pill every 6hrs with Abreva as a topical when I first started having them. It would take up to 3 days for the blisters to stop tingling, and then a few more days for the dry scab from the Abrevia to go away. The last time I had a breakout, my doctor set me up with this plan, then I went 2 years without one, until last month. I did the 2gm, 1gm thing and both times they were gone in 24hrs with no actual blisters.

lysine works better than vitamin c. not only because you need lysine to work with vitamin c for collagen synthesis, but because it's more antiviral than vitamin c is.

i'm not saying don't take vitamin c... what i'm saying is definitely take lysine.

at the first tingle and feeling of a bump on my lip, i'll down 3000mg of lysine four times a day and drink some orange juice with lots of pulp and it'll be gone by the time i wake up in the morning. no pharmaceuticals needed.

well instead of pimples, in my case it is like tiny horizontal cut wound around the corner of my lip and the area between my nose and my lip. The one around the lip is a real pain since it made it hard and painful to open my mouse to eat specially it is something high like a hamburger.

Sometime I know it is coming but not sure how to stop it. I tried apply some vinegar around the cut, it is painful as hell but it seems to acclerate the healing as it seems the vinegar kill the virus.

Is lysine good for anything other than cold sore treatment?

Is this a good one to buy?

is it painful to touch? do you have a sore throat and/or are your tonsils or lymph nodes in your neck swollen? if you look at the cut really closely, do you see a couple tiny bumps around it? kinda like a cluster above or below the skin, kinda like this? it doesn't have to be in the same place as it is in that picture... it can be anywhere on the lips.

lysine is good against any virus. it's a natural anti-viral and herpes is a virus.

yeah, it should be fine.

abrevva I know has $5 off or so coupons if you are a CVS extrabucks customer. I haven't seen them in a while, they may be online. I have heard that does work well.

May not actually be a cold sore. If I get a zit in the corner of my mouth it always takes weeks to heal because I can't keep my fingers off of it.

I usally have this during winter month, from like november to like march to Aparil. Even if it is not cold sore, with cuts like that around the lips, there tend to be infection, so it would delay the healing process. Lysine should be worth a try since anti-viral. Mine is on the left corner and right corner of my lip so it actually physically hurt when I try to open my house to eat something big.

I ask one of the Walgreen pharmacist, they completely disclaim lysine effect and try to persuade me to buy abreva. I end up picking up a bottle of L-Lysine 500mg.

If it's a winter thing you could try hydrocortisone cream as a preventative measure as well.

So in short:

Lysine has anti-viral property, but like all anti-viral, they shop working if you take too much?

Use Lysine at the first sign of outbreak and stop taking it as soon as it heal?

Doesn't sound like a cold sore, sounds like angular cheilitis. I get that too every winter and have been unable to prevent them from forming but I have gotten it to heal faster though with Burts Bees lip balm.

take it until a few days after it's healed, but yes.

all this cold sore talk has given me a cold sore lol. i just got it today during lunch. started lysine, full pulp orange juice, and abreva. should be gone by the morning.

actually, it's all the stress going on in my life and staying up until like 3am in order to try and keep life together and make it work.
