Outside of nerds I've never seen anyone with a note. 4.7 is borderline acceptable, more than that is stupid, its not a mini tablet. I have an iPad for that.

Its hard enough to strap my nexus4 into the armband for gym use as it is.
Where the hell are people going to see "a ton of Note 2s"?? I think I've seen one Note in the wild. One.

I also struggle to believe anyone who goes to the gym or does anything that involves contorting their body in any fashion is happy with a 5" phone in their pocket.

I have seen 4 Notes at the gym, not including mine, I have seen 3 Notes at the Country Club I work, My auto mechanic has one, the hot Asian check out girl at the local market has one, My lawyer has one, as does the guy that makes my sushi at my favorite restaurant...that is at least 10 right there, and none of these people fit the "nerd" description. This is also in a small Southern town in Tennessee.
I am sure there are more, but since I only frequent these places regularly, & I work around 60 hours a week, my scope is rather limited.

I can see good use for something the size of a note 2. Anything bigger and it'll be really hard to fit into a pocket, and inches into the realm of small tablets.

I don't personally watch videos or do too much on my phone that requires such a huge screen so something the size of a s3/ip5 is perfect for me, but I can see how it is useful for people who use a lot of business applications or type lengthy e-mails and such.

I will not buy a phone larger than the GS3. It barely fits my hand with a slim case on.

I have a RAZR m and love it. I don't know a single other person who had it which I find strange since its a great phone and it seems to get better battery life than all my friends s3s. Plus it feels much nicer in hand since its metal and kevlar... Had a galaxy nexus (not a great phone looking back at it) before this and the screen really is no worse than that.

I've seen women and nerds mostly with the note. And its just way too big for me the nexus was probably my border for too big and its not like my hands are small ( I can palm a basketball and I'm 5'10 so mg hands are actually pretty large for my height.

I guess I like the razr m because its just nice to not have your pocket bursting at the seems from a giant phone for a guy when you are out. With a s3 even it'd make a difference in how my pockets feel plus the RAZR m feels great in hand. If they make a razr m 2 with say 720p and say a nicer camera and maybe 2gb of ram that's really all I want out of a phone.
Yeah, the camera too. The other thing I really dislike about my RAZR HD is the camera. A RAZR M with fast dual-core CPU, 720p 4.3" screen, and excellent camera would be my ideal phone. Quad core would be nice, but not critical, unless Key Lime Pie is even more bloated, slowing things down.

However, I'm still open to the idea of an iPhone 5S/6 or a BlackBerry Z11 or whatever, esp. if the latter gets iCloud syncing. (Android's Calendar and People app can already sync to Apple iCloud, with third party app add-ons.) That's all I really want: the above hardware specs, with a nice, fast, and well-supported browser, good video playback capabilities, and iCloud support. I don't care about gaming on my phone, except for stuff like Angry Birds and low-impact gaming like that for the airport lounge.

4.7 is where it's at for me. if they could fit 5" in the same size that would be nice too.
but it better be at least 1080p. note 2 screen is too low res for me.

I do like the larger screen sizes...

...but if the Smartphone guys want to do audio peeps a favor: I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing for greatly increased storage, better DAC, and a better OpAmp. We're getting closer and closer, but it clearly would be a great good thing if manufacturers made the devices good enough to make an iPod irrelevant. Eliminate the need to carry more than one device.

If you were an audio peep, then you'd probably know that there are better mp3 players out there than an ipod in terms of audio quality.

Hifiman, Astell and Kern, Cowon, etc.... They all have their foibles and limited capacity. If I want my whole collection, I have to use my old Zune or buy an iPod classic.

But the point is I don't want to drag those around, either. :D

I'd rather have an Android with 128 Gb of storage, a good DAC, and high quality OpAmp.

Why is it ok to take apples 4s that is .99 cents with a contract and free on most fair.you do know that Samsung also sold the s3,s2,note 1 and 2 and the mini s3

The gs3,mini and note 2 combined sales blew the iPhone away this year and Samsung does not say how many phones were sold so if your using data from that site that said Samsung is at the bottom and is in the same as rimm I don't know what to tell ya.

http://m.techcrunch.com/2013/02/20/...rtphone-globally-in-q4-iphone-4s-2nd-analyst/

Samsung reports "shipped", so its actually worse than sold. I don't know what to tell ya. Lol

Samsung reported almost 200 million phones sold for 2012.and reported net income profit for q3 just over 18billion and this is right from Samsung.com go there and check out the invester section and DL the PDF for q3.you post some bs site that has Samsung at the bottom of the pit for profits when its well know that they are at 22billion for year to year and up like 87% they have not posted the q4 PDF but I'm sure you know that the gs3 and note 2 did well.

Also apple does not leak out numbers sold for every device and its all guesses from market analysis.

I can't believe you posted a source of Samsung only making 12 billion for 2012.they are spending 5 billion alone just on the galaxy marketing for this year.

And again with the link you posted why are you not including the whole Samsung galaxy brand? You do know the note 2 sold like mad q4 and so didn't the gs3 mini but its nice to pic just one phone and compare it to apple.

If Samsung didn't have more options with the note 2 and gs3 mini it would of sold more gs3s.

You need to add up all of the galaxy line up if you want to brag about who sold more phones

I don't mind 5" phones, I would say my S3 is kind of pushing it in terms of how big a screen can be while still usable in one hand. 5" wouldn't be that much of a push, but I wouldn't really use much bigger in a phone.

I've seen quite a few people with Notes who don't really know that much about tech. What they do know is that they like the Note. They haven't really compared it to a "normal" high-end smartphone in day-to-day usage, but that's not the point.

4.7" seems like a limit for me, if I were to do some one-handed operation, which happens to be the size of Nexus 4. For full one-handed use, including typing anywhere on screen, probably 4.3" is the max for me. I have a big hand but fat and somewhat short fingers. 4.5" ~ 4.7" screens with minimum bezels are the sweet spot for me.

Of course I can give up one-handed use and go full two handed-mode, but there is something weirdly nerdy about today's kids using phones with two hands every time I see them and I would like to avoid looking like one when possible. ^^ Using stylus or digitizer don't look too nerdy, though.

Often times I find it impossible to use two hands. Two hands often requires me to stop what I'm doing (eg. talking on a land line with the other phone, or carrying a bag), and it's really annoying.

I don't understand how after years and years of holding conventional phones with headsets 8" long or more it's such a suddenly a huge struggle to handle a phone with a 5" case.

That's nice, Apple made more money.

The previous poster said that larger smartphones sell more than the iPhone and I'm saying that its not true.

I'm not saying Samsung did poorly, so simmer down.

You post things without any actual proof and I did the research for you and apple did not net 42billion profit that's what there total gross sales were and there net profit for q4 is 8 billion

You do know Samsung's stock is at 1500 and has a better price to earnings ratio then apple right now right?

Here it is right off apple.com and not some site that is quessing numbers.

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2012/10/25Apple-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-Results.html

Let's see apple net profit for q4 was 8 billion and that's with selling 27 million iPhone 5s and 16 million iPhone 4s

How much you want to bet Samsung netted more q3 and q2?

I'll let you go threw the invester PDFs on apples stock earnings and wait for your results.I don't think you have a clue as to how big Samsung got in the past 2 years.year to year q4 gains are like 80% growth that's something not even apple can do.Samsung went from 160 billion to 220 billion market cap in less then 7 months and is now worth twice what Intel is worth and has assests worth over 337 billion,at the rate Samsung is growing it will be worth more then Google by the time the note 3 comes out.

Samsung has a target of 100 million gs4s for the 2013 year calendar

Everywhere I go I see people sporting GS2, GS3, and Galaxy Note smartphones. I went to Australia this past week and I saw more Samsung smartphones than iPhones. In the NYC subway I see a lot of Samsung GS3 and Notes as well.

It is rather interesting to point out that most Notes that I have spotted in the wild belonged to females. And they all had pink flip covers :p

I think I see the trend with Notes with females also. Why? It's easier to just drop one in the purse. I also see a lot in Asia because with Chinese input, it's much easier to write on a larger screen.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, there's FAR more iPhones though. It's not even a contest.

I love the large screen of the note. It makes typing on a touch screen actually a pleasant experience. I always dread having to use the wife's iphone as its impossible to hit the right keys all the time. Never any problems pocketing it either. I guess if you're into skinny jeans.... I see they all the time around Chicago too. Mostly the note II as the note I was on its way out before it really picked up in the US.

Sorry Dude.

Samsung would of done just as good if they got the gs3 out q1 and thank you for posting the correct profit for Samsung instead of the 12 billion you posted earlier.

Apple has been making those numbers every quarter and Samsung is gaining growth big time year to year.if Samsung makes the same gains this year with the gs4 and note 3 it will break 30 billion easily .

Now subtract the amount Samsung is spending in marketing and its really neck to neck right now

Well, in an attempt to steer the discussion back to the OP's spirit, I find iPhone 4/4S' screen too small now. It is still my favorite smart phone design to date, but trying to type text on one is a torture. Likewise, reading is not fun, either.

I think text is one of the most important practical factors driving larger screens. Surely marketing does play its role (1080p! Full HD! Retina!), but the need for easier human interaction with regards to text (both read and write) is a driving factor of larger screens many seem to overlook. When the alternative technologies improve (voice, gesture, hologram, whatever.. ) we may see a different trend.
