T-Mobile G1, I know some hax0r released a 2.1 update for it, to my knowledge it never even officially got the 2.0 update.

The G1 was released 18 months ago. You said people that bought phones 5 months ago.

So I ask again, what phones?

I said my friend bought a phone 5 months ago, which he did. I didn't say anything about the phone coming out 5 months ago. T-Mobile still sells the phone in fact. I think it's mighty shitty that I can go buy a phone today and have it not officially be upgradable to the latest version of the OS it runs.

You are correct - T-Mobile still sells the G1 and it has not gone beyond 1.6 in any official capacity. The reasoning I've seen is just that its hardware can't really handle it - not enough memory. Blame HTC for not making a powerful enough 1st device, not Google.

That said - 1.5 was a major release that everyone got. Really, 1.5 should have been 1.0. Having had a G1 and Droid I never understood the fuss about 2.0 or 2.1. Yea, 2.0 allows multiple gmail and exchange accounts, but other than that, there's nothing too major. 2.1 is even less of a difference.

uhh you never have to upgrade an Apple device to get an .X update. Hell my 1st gen iPhone lasted from OS 1 to 3.1.3, I know people with Androids they bought 5 months ago who are assed out because they can't even get the 2.x update. That's a huge fail lol.

An almost 4 year product support life is quite a bit better than the few months Android is on. But who knows, maybe you won't have to buy a new phone to go from 2.2 to 2.3

You said know PEOPLE with Androids THEY bought 5 months ago.....not one "friend".

If they bought the G1 5 months ago, they knew it was outdated and bought it to save $40. If they didn't read up before they bought an outdated phone, that's their fault.

Hero and Moment are getting 2.1 next month so that's 2 more. All iPhone users except 3GS are assed out on this update so nope, no multi-tasking for them at all. My 5yr old Winmo phone multi-tasked.

I agree that there have not been that many times that I have missed flash but then again, how can you miss something you don't have?

At this point its just something to shut the Apple fanbois up. Steve decided that none of them can have it and Android is opening it up to basically all Android devices. My crappy little myTouch will be able to do even more things that iPhones can't.

But then again...I'm going to retire my phone whenever a phone comes out that I am interested in. That phone WILL have flash, a huge screen and whatever other bells and whistles are out then...

is the mytouch powerful enough to handle this update? i wish the droid would come to tmobile

I'm using starfire to watch flash videos with no problem. I find more and more that the mytouch is severely underrated. I ran 2.1 on it for a bit just for kicks and it was more than fine. Live wallpapers did make a bit of a lag...but then again I didn't spend much time tweaking them.

first time i heard of starfire. where can i get it? google not pulling up what i need

Skyfire is what he's talking about.

edit:

"After a brief delay, looks like CyanogenMod 5 is now out for the HTC Dream, Magic and Sapphire, also known as the T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G. The release is labeled as experimental, so take care not to flash it onto your work phone, and G1 owners should back up their data as they'll need to install a little something called the DangerSPL (which has phone bricking potential) and perform a full wipe. If you're the kind of individual who doesn't shy away from software explicitly labeled "danger," get cracking on that rooted Eclair at the source link."
