...yes I'm complaining about a free service but the other free email providers don't cause this problem.

You know how when there's a link within a Hotmail email you receive... you click on it, it opens it up in a new window. At the top is that frame that says "You're visiting a site outside of Hotmail. Close this window to return to Hotmail" (or something to that effect). Whenever you're on a page like that which requires a login... such as when clicking a link like this from a Hotmail email:

https://secure.buy.com/corp/support/login.asp?what=track

You try to login but it doesn't accept it because the damned top frame prevents it - either not allowing sessions or cookies. This has pissed me off for years and I still can't find someone at Hotmail to bring this up with. (ANYONE HAVE AN ADDRESS?!)

They've improved their spam filtering and soon their storage space... but this is the kind of problem that supercedes all other issues. Countless times we get emails containing links to other sites that require logins... and USUALLY it won't work because of this problem. :| As for why I haven't switched... I have Yahoo and GMail but I can't easily switch off an email address I've had for so long.

It's gotten to the point that whenever I create my own web apps for others, I have to put in a JS header to break the frames:
<SCRIPT>
if (self.location != top.location) {
top.location.href = self.location.href
}
</SCRIPT>
since I'm sending out the URL and recipients may be Hotmail addresses. Those MSN mofos. This would be a viable option if EVERY website out there requiring logins put code like that at the top of their pages. :roll:

Anyone else in the same boat because in the past 6 years, I can't be the only person who's noticed this...

Yes I do have the same problem. The sh1tty thing is I can't easily migrate to another email address because I have been using the same hotmail address since 1996.. :(

the .forward file is your friend. Last year my provider since pre-1992 sold out. I had to change my addy. Slight bump in the road, but within 2-3 months everything was updated. My box gets 200-300 mails a day.

Yeah that's very annoying, especially considering that if you open a site within that frame the cookies/session on it may not work properly.

Just connect to your hotmail account using Outlook or Outlook Express, synch the account, and then drag the folder full of E-mails onto your desktop.

I was thinking along something else, posted that right after my workout.

You may have to download it to a server to run it against the forwarder. I haven't used HM in forever but it used to work with Outlook so you should be able to pop or IMAP the mail.

I use outlook express for it and have no problems. The linking problem is a non-issue then. I'm on the free service, not paid.

I feel your pain... I have the same problem.
I usually end up forwarding messages I need to click on to a REAL email account. Hotmail has sucked ever since Microsoft bought them. I miss the old hotmail that I signed up for looooong ago.

Hotmail is dead thanks to gmail.

1) No Times Square saturation of ads.
2) No crappy limit.
3) As so far, no spam.
4) gmail: Fast- fast-fast! Hotmail: slow-slow-slow!

Bad year for Microsoft:

gmail > hotmail
firefox > IE
OS X > Windows

I've found that with Mozilla/Firefox the cookie thing never comes up. Either the sites don't require cookies, or Moz/FF gets around it. Oh yes, that and the handy-dandy right-click menu option called "Show only this frame". Busts out of that annoying hotmail frame quite nicely.

Once again, Mozilla/Firefox > IE

i had the same problem so i switched to fastmail, aet that up to grab all my hotmaile-mail every couple of hours and never visited the acount again. then i spent the next couple months letting people know i switched. no real hurry since i still got all the mail that wen't to that acount. then after i got everybody up to date i killed the hotmail acount and lost alot of spam in the process.
