In florida? 1 in 4

At least, that was what they told me when I obtained my Florida CCW.

oh, and my solution to the problem? I moved out of Florida. Have not felt the need to carry since.
I live in a red state, even though my county has been blue for the past 2 elections... I carry. Wife carries, daughter carries, grandson is waiting on his permit (he just turned 21).

That is really sad :(.

There are a lot of areas where it is just not necessary. If you ever get the chance to move someplace else, just do it. Not having to do the drills or the range time saves a lot of time and money, and the peace of mind does wonders. Once you leave shitty America, the jobs, housing, healthcare, education are all better. The people have a far greater sense of community and humanity and it is a far healthier way and place to thrive.

People live in situations for a long time and they begin to accept them as normal. It is not until a person is removed from a situation they realize just how completely insane it is.

What the gun control people fail to realize is there are many shitty horrific places in this country where the value of a firearm greatly exceeds its liability. Unlucky people for various unfortunate reasons to end up living in those violent and cruel communities. They need to be allowed to have a fighting chance.

The flip side is the pro-gun people need to realize that is a completely insane situation and there are many places in this country a firearm is nothing more then massive liability. That owning a firearm for self defense is not normal and is an indicator of complete and utter failure of their community and neighborhood.

Respectfully with no gotcha's or any sort of the typical bullshit.

Why do you personally carry?
Is it need sort of thing where you have had to use it in some way?
Have you been a victim of a violent crime?
If you have not been in a position where you needed a weapon to defend yourself, what led you to believe that you need it for your safety.
Is it a simple manner of fucking bears\cougars making you poop a little when all you are trying to do is throw out the bathroom garbage?
Is it more of a want thing where you just like to carry?
Is it a peer pressure thing?

Because our society is circling the drain. gangs, hood rats, road ragers. Too old to run or fight/too young to die.

Have you been in a situation where you needed to brandish your weapon? Is your area considered dangerous?
What state\region are you in?

Brandishing a weapon is a crime.
I have had my hand on it, but no one else was aware. This was the parking lot of a grocery store.
No place is safe, name a place where no one is carjacked, mugged, robbed at an ATM, etc.

What was the situation in the parking lot where you got nervous enough to put your hand on the gun? How did it turn out?

I dont know about MountMn but I can tell you why.

I've been beaten up many many times in my life and in some cases those beatings were not from regular assholes I knew werent planning to kill me, but complete strangers who may very well have been planning to kill me or done it unintentionally. I have been threatened MANY times in my life. One night on New Years Eve a man actually tried to kill me.
Yes.
Yes.
A man said he was going to beat my fuckin ass and kill me and then attempted to do it.
No.
Not really. A gun actually capable of stopping a threat has some size and weight. Its actually a little uncomfortable but you get used to it.
No. I am not part of any club or community that pressure me into anything even remotely violent. Its a safety issue.

Same reason I keep a small fire extinguisher in my car and two large ones in my house: I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I was brought up with the teachings that a gun is just a tool, and like every other tool it needs to be used properly or injury will result. I am very sad America chose to politicize that tool and and the same time forget all the safety and practical considerations, but I do not want to be disarmed just because asshole republicans use it as a symbol and a phallic replacement.

UNLESS, somebody out there, like a president, can GUARANTEE my safety. If we can somehow magically make the whole country a safe place so I never ever need a gun ever again, yes, I will give them all up.
NOBODY can make that promise. Its ridiculous. Even Switzerland is not that safe, and its probably the safest country on the planet.

My complaint is the republican party is the one fighting to keep guns and also fighting to make America a worse place to live and sometimes I wonder if thats a coincidence.

I used to carry in a purse/bag, the sort of thing a person who was in the CCW community would recognize, but someone who was not would not.

I was manning the frost desk of the motel I managed and had a small minority ownership. We were a block off the beach and popular with people who wanted something cheaper then water front but still wanted to be near the beach.

An officer from two counties away stayed in one of the units for his vacation with his girl friend. I knew he was an officer because he flashed his badge on check in. Some officers do this because while they cannot ask for a discount, they can fish for it.

His girlfriend split mid party with his friends (he never mentioned anything to me about a party prior). He started looking for his girl friend with his friends, but he did not know the area. He pushed me pretty aggressive on that first interaction after his girlfriend split and set off alarms in my head. I hunted her down quite quickly, and she had left on foot with her purse and phone while him and his friends were partying. She had a phone on her with someone coming to pick her up and just wanted me to let her be. I gave her some suggestions and returned to my property.

I carried the gun for the rest of the night, with the bag resting on my right hip in a position I had drilled with. As a property / business owner I had no obligation to back down and I knew it. I was also a bit angry. I saw his vehicle pull in again about an hour and a half later. I unzipped the bag and put my hand on the bag before he stepped through the office door. He saw it and instantly knew what was in the bag. His gun was tucked in the small of his back, and he likely knew I knew it. His attitude switched from the aggressive I will fuck you up to polite lets be reasonable. He friends did not and we had a very odd interaction where his friends were goading him on, but he suddenly was perfectly happy to stay on his side of the desk. The security camera likely helped.

I gave him a full refund and sent him on his way. Probably seems odd, but I just wanted to be rid of him. He never did find his girl friend, no idea what happened to her after she was picked up. He likely thought I helped her, but had no way of knowing for sure.

That is my most f---ed up story I have. I knew of people who were attacked by homeless people and put in the hospital. One assault occurred less then a hundred yards from where I was living. A pair of guys who had a good time and were walking back at night a bit tipsy were taken down, mugged, and left badly injured. Would sometimes have people try door knobs in the middle of the night. Had things stolen like chairs, cushions, the outdoor patio stuff. Never cared to much about that. Cops were worse then useless.

99% of the time I did not carry, I would only grab the bag when I knew it was going to be questionable. I was also real friendly and tried to always be super calm and chill with just about everyone. Being respectful, timing ones approach to early morning when people are the opposite of high, giving people time to move on, that sort of thing.

This is turning into a pretty interesting thread. Thank you for sharing.
What state\region?

Interesting (If I read that correctly) that this situation involved a cop.

Florida, intercoastal, Atlantic side

He was 100% a police officer and he already had flashed his badge while fishing for a discount. He acted like one to. He was out of his jurisdiction on vacation.

I haven't considered one for concealed carry, but have for the house. A week before Christmas my neighbors chased off someone trying to break into their back door at 5:00pm on a Thursday. That's about 20 feet from my back door and could have easily been mine. There's been a rash of break ins all around my neighborhood. Usually it's businesses, but homes getting more common. And at just unexpected times of day. Seriously...who tries to break into a place at 5pm on a weekday? Cops didn't even come out or respond.

We've got gates but he just hopped them. I've got a security camera on the back porch about 15' up and looking over our back door. I used to only enable it at bedtime. Now it's on full time.

I lived all over the world. It was a Hooters restaurant in Virginia where a man named Christopher Keith Dunham tried to kill me. He's from Georgia. They keep letting him out.

I am a straight white male. Nobody wants to hear it but we can be victims too. I'm short and I don't look very impressive and while that might be the determining factor in being harassed regularly by assholes it also means the vast majority of cops are not intimidated by me, so I'm always treated well at traffic stops. I do keep my hands on top of the steering wheel however.

Reading all these stories, so happy I’m a Canadian. But that being said, still don’t get why the average citizen needs a gun let alone an assault rifle.

The problem with that is the guys who like their assault rifles in our country are also the guys who like sticking small children in cages.

I have not seen any of the other assault rifle types protecting those kids either, so I call BS.

It was the anti-assault rifle types that put an end to that particular evil in the USA for the time being.

Loading groceries in the back of my car, when a car with dark tinted windows came speeding down the row I was on, and stopped very abruptly directly behind me, probably within 6 feet.

Hand on gun, thumb on safety, in my waistband, turned and faced them. Not sure exactly what they were up to, but the guy decided his best option was to not get out (he had opened the passenger door), and the car sped off.

Their intent... who knows, just fuck with old man, take his car, rob? But I'm pretty sure they sensed this guy might not be an easy mark.

I don't think it's so cut and dry at that.

Colorado and most of Denver is a wonderful, clean and progressive place.. But..

We used to play Columbine HS and I've personally been there about the same time as the shooting. Littleton was not really any different than my part of town.

Used to go to the theatre in Aurora where that joker nut case shot up the place.

At one point I used buy my groceries at that King Soopers in Boulder(!, Hippie town) where that fuck walked in and killed a bunch of people last year.

A HS friend was murdered at his restaurant job when some fired, disgruntled crazy fuck came back and systematically executed the closing staff.

That's just my experience.

Not shitholes or bad parts of town. Murders occurred in places I've been just because of crazy people, and I'm lucky, and the people that are dead were not that day.

I don't carry bc not sure it doesn't create more trouble than it potentially solves, but I understand the ppl that want to.

I only envy your status as a Canadian because of your health care system. And you all get way too serious about winter.

I imagine many Canadians are still victims of violent crimes, and if physically unable to defend themselves (or run) are defenseless.

You need an assload of training to make a gun worth while. And no state in the union has the same requirements for a permit. And none of them have very high minimums. In reality you need not only a good beginners and intermediate class, but also regular follow up classes. The concealed carry world is a lot more complex than most people realize and its also more misunderstood than any other community.

Even here in Toronto, our random crime rates are low. Any violent crimes are targeted or domestic.
