Wow, WTF. I saw someone else say Xfinity in this thread, but didn't pay much attention. Now that you said that, I had to go out and search for it. Comcast is becoming Xfinity? WTF.
Gizmodo said it best
"So, Comcast has some public image issues. And what do you do when you want to fix the perception but not the underlying problems? Change your name! Change it to the worst, pseudo-pornographic, retro-futuristic garbage marketing dollars can buy."
That's really lame. First i've heard of this.
I can attest to similiar problems.
Speaking of FIOS, about a year to two years ago all of a sudden everyone in my area took a huge performance hit. I'm talking about a speed of .5mb during the evening hours.
Comcast kept insisting I was the only one having a problem. Even after I gave them 20 name of other people with the same problem.
Turns out, they were "managing" their network to provide more bandwidth to the Boston area since they were in competition with FIOS there.
It took a month before Comcast did something about it. Even then we were not as fast as we had been for the last couple of years.
Spidey in 5-4-3-2-1.....
Today Charter increased its customers' speeds for free. 5M went to 8M, 10 went to 16 and 20 went to 25.
I went from Time Warner to FiOS. Best movie I've ever made.
AHHHH THOSE FUCKING COCKMONGLERS!!
We just got our bill for this month. They were gracious enough to upgrade our speed from 30bit to 16mbit, and slash prices from 49.99 to 57.99.
Now I'm fucking pissed.
Will be calling tomorrow to threaten them with FIOS if they dont drop the price.
This is getting stupid.

I should have said Boston area.We don't have FIOS in most of Boston. Apparently they'd have to tear the shit out of the infrastructure they have in place, (roads, etc.) so they're not coming here any time soon.
I'm surprised Spidey hasn't commented in this thread yet.
Shocked, actually.
I can only surmise that with the snow and wind in the northeast he's been on the phones explaining to people with no internet that they are the only one reporting a problem, and someone can come out next tuesday to check on the problem.
When i first got cable broadband here it was great, still under the @home name and I must have been one of a handfull to have it. just spent hours going around the web opening any videos I could find as it loaded the pages and files so damn fast.
now the service is soo oversold that they've created tiers so if you aren't willing to pay a premium they can tell you to enjoy the crappy service.
I should have said Boston area.
they are working around the clock to supply it. Everywhere West of Boston (Natick, Newton, Watertown, etc) has it. The less dense parts of Somerville may get it soon. Brighton and most of Cambridge will not be getting it soon. Pretty much anywhere around Boston that is not dense will get it. Heck, even Chelmsford, Ma is getting it.
Clearly FIOS is cherry picking the areas that have the lowest installation/highest revenue.
Nothing wrong with that, they are in it to make money.
However, it has also become clear that Comcast is improving service in areas that have FIOS. Proof that competition is good.
The sad thing is that Comcast has franchises and the franchise leasers should be able to force Comcast to provide equivalent service in other areas.
After all, that's the price they pay for the franchise.
