OP might want to put 'Xfinity' in his post, so anyone searching the web for 'Xfinity' will find this thread. Can't let Comcast dodge its reputation by a slick name-change.

Wow, WTF. I saw someone else say Xfinity in this thread, but didn't pay much attention. Now that you said that, I had to go out and search for it. Comcast is becoming Xfinity? WTF.

Gizmodo said it best

"So, Comcast has some public image issues. And what do you do when you want to fix the perception but not the underlying problems? Change your name! Change it to the worst, pseudo-pornographic, retro-futuristic garbage marketing dollars can buy."

That's really lame. First i've heard of this.

Comcast wants to capitalize on the success of the XFL.

AHHHH THOSE FUCKING COCKMONGLERS!!

We just got our bill for this month. They were gracious enough to upgrade our speed from 30mbit to 16mbit, and slash prices from 49.99 to 57.99.
Now I'm fucking pissed.
Will be calling tomorrow to threaten them with FIOS if they dont drop the price.
This is getting stupid.

I see that they raised my cable bill again when they changed their service name to Xfinity... and they started charging me 25 cent a month rental fee again for the DVR remote. I don't even have that damn remote... I gave it back to the cable company when I got a Harmony remove for the home theater. Bastards!

I can attest to similiar problems.

Speaking of FIOS, about a year to two years ago all of a sudden everyone in my area took a huge performance hit. I'm talking about a speed of .5mb during the evening hours.
Comcast kept insisting I was the only one having a problem. Even after I gave them 20 name of other people with the same problem.

Turns out, they were "managing" their network to provide more bandwidth to the Boston area since they were in competition with FIOS there.

It took a month before Comcast did something about it. Even then we were not as fast as we had been for the last couple of years.

Spidey in 5-4-3-2-1.....

We don't have FIOS in most of Boston. Apparently they'd have to tear the shit out of the infrastructure they have in place, (roads, etc.) so they're not coming here any time soon.

Today Charter increased its customers' speeds for free. 5M went to 8M, 10 went to 16 and 20 went to 25.

Did they also double their upstream bandwidth? I hate when ISPs give out an "upgrade" like this but don't touch their upstream bandwidth. It actually becomes more of a downgrade since now you have people fighting for bandwidth and your speeds are actually lower!

My ISP did this when they went from 1mb to 5mb, I actually saw a huge drop in my speeds. Now it's a bit better though as they did eventually do major infrastructure upgrades and even added redundancy.

They doubled all uploads last month. They actually secretly increased most users speeds last week but they waited to announce it today.

I went from Time Warner to FiOS. Best movie I've ever made.

Is it out in the theater yet? :D

To those who have Comcast (Xfinity D:), just take solace in the fact that Time Warner operates nearly the exact same way.

WTF. I'd be uber pissed if they increased by bill and decreased my speeds. Hell, I already am uber pissed at them.

That sucks man.

I dunno, 30bit to 16mbit is a 533333% increase.

It took Time Warner Cable over four months to even think about fixing our overloaded node at home. Half the day, on a 10mbps connection, I would be getting 1-2mbps from Speedtest, and 300ms pings that spiked every five or ten seconds. It was absolutely horrendous. I kept doing diagnostics to make sure nothing was wrong with the router/modem/computer, and made a bunch of calls to TW. After a few, I finally got ahold of an upper-level tech, who discovered that they knew our node was overloaded and was supposedly scheduled to get upgraded in xx amount of time.

When i first got cable broadband here it was great, still under the @home name and I must have been one of a handfull to have it. just spent hours going around the web opening any videos I could find as it loaded the pages and files so damn fast.

now the service is soo oversold that they've created tiers so if you aren't willing to pay a premium they can tell you to enjoy the crappy service.

You have to admire the cable companies chutzpah.
Who else could advertise you were getting a certain amount of something, and then in the fine print say, maybe not?

It's like buying a 16 oz box of cereal, yet the fine print says it could be less, and so you actually only get 11 ounces.

I'm surprised Spidey hasn't commented in this thread yet.

Shocked, actually.
I can only surmise that with the snow and wind in the northeast he's been on the phones explaining to people with no internet that they are the only one reporting a problem, and someone can come out next tuesday to check on the problem.

Oh man, I REALLY miss @home. I used to get incredible speeds with @home and never had a single problem. They were cheaper, provided a modem and had good customer service. It was never down like Comcrap was. Those were the days! Then Comcast bought them out and it's been meh ever since. Comcast is decent when it works, but when it doesn't....you're screwed.

I should have said Boston area.

they are working around the clock to supply it. Everywhere West of Boston (Natick, Newton, Watertown, etc) has it. The less dense parts of Somerville may get it soon. Brighton and most of Cambridge will not be getting it soon. Pretty much anywhere around Boston that is not dense will get it. Heck, even Chelmsford, Ma is getting it.

Clearly FIOS is cherry picking the areas that have the lowest installation/highest revenue.
Nothing wrong with that, they are in it to make money.

However, it has also become clear that Comcast is improving service in areas that have FIOS. Proof that competition is good.
The sad thing is that Comcast has franchises and the franchise leasers should be able to force Comcast to provide equivalent service in other areas.
After all, that's the price they pay for the franchise.

yup. I mean, I think Newton and Wellesley were the first areas to get it. To no surprise, the avg salary in those areas are pretty high. They are not interested in coming to Boston because not only will the installation be too high, but most people there rent and lots of people only stay in their condos for months at a time. While there is a market there, it's not as big as you think.
