I got a bottle of one of the first years they produced it. I want to say I paid ~$140, but I can't really remember. Very interesting, and maybe worth it for the experience if you have the extra cash, but that kind of money would get you a nice scotch or two.

Personally, I agree.

I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a beer, would be a good single malt or two.

But if ya have the cash go for it I guess :)

I paid 23 bucks for a 16oz bottle of old rasputin barrel aged XIV a few years ago.

Almost paid 22 bucks for a bottle of parabajava while visting firestone walker couple weeks ago, but decided not to. Nitro merlin on tap was quiet good.
You've come a long way, baby.

Barrel aged stuff is expensive, I bought some bombers of straightjacket for 18$ recently and a bunch of other barrel aged stuff. The amount time they have to put into it, plus the fact that barleywines and imperial stouts take more material to make plus buying the barrels always makes them more expensive. I love barrel aged beer but lately it's becoming really annoying to get, so many people are jumping on the bandwagon.

I don't mind spending the money on it since I like it a lot, and considerably more work goes into it than making a non barrel aged beer.

I like Rasputin Barrel Aged, but I like Narwhal a decent bit better.

Damn expensive stuff though, its great that its strong so I need to drink less of it to get a good buzz going.

A couple weeks back I had a couple pints of Berkshire Brewing Company Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale with dinner. It was the second time I had this draft at a bar or pub. I don't know what I paid by the pint, as we split the bill. Last night I came across this BBC ale in the store. They were selling a 22 oz bottle for just less than $10 a bottle. They were out of stock of the 64 oz jug with a screw top. No idea how much they wanted for this. Didn't buy. I thought it was too much.

If that were the case then I might agree with you. AB/INBEV is using its ownership in the distribution channel, and its size to "entice" distributors to limit the shelf space given to smaller brewers by offering rebates in the hundreds of thousands of dollar range. Effectively limiting the successes of those little brewers, you know the ones like Lagunitas, 10 Barrel, Elysian, Four Peaks and the like. Without the ability for those, at one time small startups, to have shelf space in the big distributors they would have stayed small, and not be an issue for AB. So instead of waiting until the owners are ready to hand over the keys for a few million, AB is trying to make it so that no little guy can get big. If your OK giving your hard earned cash to a company that is hell bent on destroying the little guy, have at it, not this guy. When a company gets so fucking big that its marketing company creates a super bowl ad ridiculing a product they make, I think they might be just a bit to big.

Everything you said.

At my store we had a 12oz Mikkeller that was $40. And that's not even really pricey for Mikkeller stuff. I've seen Bombers from him that were in the THOUSANDS for a single Bomber.

That double bastard is absurd. Thats $14 in my townD:eek:_O

I honestly dont blink an eye at a $15+ 22oz anymore. If you really step into the micro world it costs money. I'm a big fan of Ruination 2.0. I need to try some of the Ninkasi Ground Control.

We had a case of that stuff, interesting gimmick. Since they sent it up in an actual rocket into space to ferment or whatever. It actually does justify the price hike. I never got around to trying it, so I'm not sure if it was a gimmick just for the sake of a gimmick or it actually made it different

OP needs to drink more (good) beer. Picked up Abyss, 2x Prairie Coffee Okie 2x, Prairie Bomb (not xmas), and 2x Griffinclaw Oblivious last Friday. Almost $100 for the lot and that was at book pricing.

I've actually saved a lot on beer since my friend has really upped his home brewing game...4 taps at all times at his house so usually we'll crack open 2 or 3 beers and the rest we'll drink his stuff.

After living on an island that is sorely lacking in good beer options, those $15 bombers can go to hell. I just want a six pack of a decent pale ale for $8.

A few of our local places still has some. I doubt it really makes much of a difference, but the thought that you are ingesting something thats been to space is kinda cool. I may grab a bottle this weekend, it's just under $20.
You realize that pic is for a 3 liter bottle right?

I did not. Upon closer inspection that bottle is pretty sweet too. Thats not really that expensive though considering it is 3 liters.

I live fairly close to AleSmith in San Diego and they make some amazing stuff. Their Old Numbskull is a good American Barleywine and they make a great coffee-imperial stout called Speedway. They barrel age both (and a lot of their other beer) from time to time and they are wonderful. They have to sell their bottles on browpapertickets for these special releases and they usually $25-30. It's a lot for beer but I figure it's not bad if you compare it to wine.

It's probably going to get a bit easier to get Mikkeller beer. They are partnering with AleSmith and taking over their old brewery.

I spent about $120 on a case of St Bernardus Abt 12 2 weeks ago, but I just remembered that i'm quitting alcohol with my wife for the next month or so. UGH.

Don't worry it will age nicely.

Glad that some connoisseurs came into this thread, seeing some really good brews. Along with some crazy shit as well.

Sounds like part of my confusion is ignorance of the barleywine process. I personally can't stand them but I can respect a more intensive process.

I love barrel aged beers and totally get that part of it. A local micro won a medal for a barrel aged Russian imperial that is just sublime. I think it's around $6 a snifter at the bar, $40 for a growler. So fresh and so damn good.
