HTC released their source code for One and Droid DNA

What will this actually do for us? Will it help those building CM 10/10.1?

I hear about source codes all the time, but I never truly read into what they are actually for.

You can do whatever you want with the source. aosp is pretty much stock and easier to work with. It depends what features you want to tweak or add. I have always used sense roms on my HTC devices I wasnt a big fan of aosp or cm.

Security off. Allowing you access to custom kernels, CPU and gpu scripts. You flash these and improve battery, CPU performance as well as custom apps and tweaks

Meaning its no longer locked in what ever software came from your carrier. You can also flash custom radios.

It's also entirely an HTC thing. Basically there's more than one layer of security and unlocking the bootloader isn't s-off.

For example, on my One X, if you unlock the bootloader you can flash a custom ROM without too much trouble but it requires jumping through (nowadays small) hoops to install a new kernel or radio.

S-off means you can flash to whatever and you're done without having to worry about it reverting.

Depends , for my HTC rezound I had to use a plastic cover paperclip connected to a port on the back and the other end to the ground port while running a command line program to get s off.
They lock down their stuff pretty tight.

Usually the easier ones yes through a software install of some sort, usually overwriting kernels.

HTC did allow users now to achieve a soft s off with their dev tool but this is not full s off.

Necessary but nowhere near sufficient.

Since Sense isn't the same as AOSP, it's mostly a matter of lifting (and reverse-engineering) any closed-source driver blobs, RIL (radio interface layer) code, and other bits and integrating them into the CM base rather than working off the released code directly.

If you're not an ATT, you just unlock the bootloader via HTCdev, flash a recovery and the root files (doesn't require an exploit).

S-off is usually gained via exploit after this (sometimes never found).



If you're on ATT, then you hope there's an exploit to gain root. And those exploits can get ugly to do (as sze5003 and his Rezound example can attest to).

It was a little intimidating to try but the people I run my site with build a lot of roms and assured me it's not that bad. Took 2 tries and worked fine. I now get double the battery life with a custom Rom and kernel and I'm a very heavy user. For me, it's fun and interesting. Others may not prefer going through with it.

Well it's not hard if you can follow instructions (my Nexus One had a weird procedure where you had to cut a bit of your battery off so you could pull out the microSD in the middle of something).

Still, compared to just copy and pasting a command for ODIN on the Samsung phones, it's rather scary.

I've done it for my EVO3D and it wasn't that hard. I think I also did another phone... my HERO? But I don't recall it having s-off on it...
