Anandtech sold out?

I just finished reading the mid-range buyers guide at Anandtech and I am shocked that they continue to recommend the Nutech DDW-082 burner. Thier argument is that the burner is cheap, but the far superior NEC ND-2510A is only 6 bucks more! Plus, the NEC drive supports Dual Layer burns, whereas the Nutech does not. Am I wrong here or did Anandtech completely sell out to Nutech?

I don't think they sold out.

If they ever do (which I don't think they will), I'd imagine it would be something bigger than a burner buried deep within the monthly mid-range buyers guide.

Perhaps. But I just find it difficult that anyone could recommend this drive above the NEC 2510A. Just a quick peek at newegg would reveal the popularity of the nec over the nutech model.

I guess I am a little upset that I took Anandtech's recommendation and purchased a NuTech DDW-082 burner and I have regretted it since day one. It's complete crap. If I burn at speeds faster than 1x, the movies come out with occasional pixelated screens. Plus, the burner already died on me so I had to send it back to newegg to get another crapping nutech drive.

Well, this is a good way to get the news out.

I'd post a comment in the article as well, and maybe even email the person that wrote it. Let them know why you disagree.

Read speeds are also awful with the Nutech model. It takes 12 minutes to read a dvd movie on to my hard drive. But with my regular old dvd drive it only takes 8 minutes to read the same movie. (Using anydvd/copydvd combo)

That NuTech drive truly is a piece of junk. I bought it in the first place because of the reviews from AT. Then I ended up returning it bakc to newegg.

If you concurr that the Nutech drive is a piece of crap, please take the time to post a comment in the mid-range buyers guide article. I would hate for AT to become a sell out industry fanboy site like cnet. I know that is a bit of a stretch, but ya never know.

Here's my comment on the article:

I generally believe that AT does a great job at putting forth excellent recommendations, but there is one recommendation in this article that is simply ridiculuos. I am talking about recommendation of the NuTech DDW-082 burner. This burner has been recommended month on month in this guide. But quite honestly, it's a piece of crap. I purchase this drive based mainly on AT's recommendation and I have regretted it ever since. I have tried several different media with this drive and the performance is still awful. If I burn movies faster than 1x, the movies come out with pixelated scenes. Further, the drive has abysmal read speeds. My year old vanilla-flavored dvd consistently outperforms the Nutech drive by a 20-50% margin. I believe that the NEC ND-2510A burner is superior to the NuTEch burner. Not only does it support Dual Layer media, but it has better media support. NuTech is a second rate company. It's website support is awful and limited. Furthermore, AT's recommendation rest on a $6 dollar price differential. 6 bucks!. You lose DL support, (yes, dl media is rare) but for 6 lousy bucks you get a resonable future proof drive from a trusted company. Shame on AT for recommending this inferior burner.

paxnot you might tone it down just a little -- most likely the AT reviewer got one of the few drives that does work as advertised, and made the recommendation on low price plus good performance (for that sample).

It's silly to think NuTech could or would pay a big enough bribe to produce a knowingly tainted recommendation.

Yes, it's frustrating that NuTech probably deceived AT by sending a "golden sample" hand-picked drive. But you could respond with a little more calmness and courtesy instead of yelling "sold out!" in a crowded forum.

Dave. The title is a sensasionalist. I apologies for that. Nevertheless, I'm on my second run with this drive and although it's functioning well. It still is underperforming. Also, in the original review of this burner, it's suggested that AT went out and bought this drive on their own (at least that is what I take from the article). So I doubt, the "golden sample" scenario applies here.

Now just for fun. I would like to analyze the articles reasoning for recommending the nutech drive. Here is the relevant excert:

"For a few months there, NEC's 2500A was a pretty hot buy for those who wanted a sort of cheap stopgap between today's 8X DVD+/-RW technology and tomorrow's 16X DVD+/-RW technology. No worries, simple, and cheap. But the DDW-082 has sort of taken over that spot, especially at the tender price of just $62. So, today, we choose NuTech's DDW-082 8X DVD burner. We did an extensive roundup of 8X DVD burners just a couple months ago, and concluded that the DDW-082 was the best burner of the bunch."

----
Now the first curious thing about this line of argument is that the NEC drive wasn't part of that 8x round up. Oh well, you can't blaim AT for that. But what I find most interesting about this review is that AT acknowledges that the NEC drive has been a "hot" buy and that somehow the nutech burner is now a "sweeter" buy because of it's new price point. This is funny, because the nutech burner has always been about 6 dollars cheaper than the nec, so their is nothing new that has made the nutech burner that much sweeter. Yes, yes there's some very funny logic going on here.

I dont think they've sold out. They just might have gotten lucky and got the "golden sample" as someone in here said. I still trust AT reviews much more than other websites reviews.

Thanks for pointing that out! I was thinking about getting that burner thinking it must be good.
I forgot that I can't just trust one source, but after all these years at anandtech, I didn't think twice about it.
Thanks, again.

I never understood all of the hoopla about the NuTech drive; I guess I never read the review here on it. I'd rather stick with a name brand with a history behind it than with some "new" brand-name that was $6 cheaper. Besides, AT has never been exactly the first place to look for optical drive reviews on the internet, if you know what I mean. I'm sure that they are trying to change that, but that will take time and experience.
Besides, if you spend any time in the Hot Deals forum, you would see much more enthusiasm among members here towards the NEC and Pioneer drives (along with some for the BenQ and Optorite).

Review articles are often misleading.

I saw a review on the a FIC motherboard once so I decided to try it out and the one I got seemed to be a lemon. One of our friends had the same model and theirs was a lemon also. I didnt discover this right away so I still have it. I replaced it with an Asus Motherboard that worked just fine for a long time.

Please don't post saying your FIC motherboard runs great, because I have heard that before. Maybe your motherboard runs great, and if it does I am glad for you. There are probably happy people that are using a PC Chips motherboard also.

The whole point is often a manufacturer hand picks a sample product and sends it to a review site. The Site reviews the part and it seems to run great because it does run great. However, it may not be representative of that product's true quality and performance.

1st off...K, maybe I'm 1 Anand Fanboy (Congrats on the Marriage Broham;)) because I've been hanging around since the 90]s since Geocities but any off theses recommendations IMO must be compared to what 1 wants and has on hand...Is it worth the upgrade or purchase today? In this Case I would think some things need adjusted but no way would I tell a client who has the Drive to go and purchase a DL DVD to replace it when the Dics alone cost mucho $'s...
PS...

Anandtech sold out? I very Seriousely Doubt it as it makes no sense whatsoever.

I bought a Plextor 708a based on cdrinfo and anandtech's reveiws and the drive was great for about 7 months then it deid. At the time of the purchase i went against many recomendations to get the Pioneer dvd burner, and now i regret it [Ipurchased the new Pioneer 16x dvdr to replace the plextor]. Hopefully I made a good choice, The point is that I have my own requrements based on my experiences and those of others, I will definitely read anandtech reveiws for future purchases on hardware based on my experiences with the reveiws, and consider them trustworthy, reliable and informative. Much info is subjective and has to be assimilated by me [ or not ] then I make my decision I feel for you because I have bought hardware before that i just hated, but i take the blame for that and chalk one of for experience.

I won't make a purchase decision on ONE review. I tend to search around and see what everybody has to say about the same product before buying. I have wanted a DVD burner now for over a month but can't decide on which one I want based on what I have read. I also treasure user inputs because if enough users report good results with a certain product then I feel assured that the product is worth my money. Note: I've been burned in the past from a review also, although I can't remember where I saw the review.

The Nutech DDW-082 burner is an absolute piece of junk, BTC also has some really crappy burners.

Pioneer, LiteON and NEC stay with the best.
