It's down almost every night around 3-4AM EST during weekdays for maintenance. Unless that has changed since moving to the cloud.

Actually now that you mention it, I'm never up that late in the week, I just always assumed it was just once a week, but yeah maybe it's more often now.

Quite ridiculous that a tech forum has this many issues. I'd be ashamed if my forums had to be brought down that often, and they only have a fraction of the userbase. Uptime is a virtue. 😛

lol "We apologise for any inconvenience." If they were truly sorry, they would fix their site.

I frequent (I should say, used to frequent) a site that has been broken since November. The admin is some punk 20-something who is too lazy to keep the site running, despite the fact that it used to have a significant user base and the potential to be a cash cow. Now it's in shambles, plagued by database errors and a shadow of what it used to be. Don't complain, we don't have it too bad here.

Your not the bloke that owns prodigits?

Thank you.

Plus, stop bitching at the mods, we can't fix the forum. That's for the DB/server guys.

Who are those nitwits, the db/server guys? I think if every one here pitches in one dollar a month, we can get these folks the edjumacation they need to keep this place up. come'on people, it's less than a cup of coffee a month.

This site is down for maintenance half of the time, far more often than most websites out there. For a website dedicated to technology, it doesn't really seem like the people running this site have any understanding of it. Also, if a site is down for maintenance this much, you would think that they would make improvements during that maintenance, but they never do. It's still the same broken website. Also, the design of this forum is very bad. You have to click on several links to view a list of your personal forum posts, the search bar is hidden beneath a link, etc. Even a novice programmer should be able to realize not to make some of the awful decisions that have been made with this website.

Didn't they try a subscription service before to a resounding FAIL?

Right now, there is an open mike sound off thread on this subject by forum moderator IDon'tCare.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2219446

I am, as far as I know, the only person who posted this subject on that thread.

The second thing to say, is that forum moderators have no power or responsibility for fixing forum down time issues? Whom we should address on those down time issues is not clear, what is clear is that forum moderators are not the folks to bitch to.

something like that, but it was to provide the membership that paid a faster connection. That and sexual favors I believe. This would be more of a donation, kinda like a special olympics donation.

lol having to pay for a faster connection, something that is available for free on any other website.

But since that was a fail, what makes you think that enough donations would come in to actually warrant doing something?

My point is proven below.....
(in before the 98798745967349865 posts of a "why should we have to pay for the forum to work right", then the reply of "the forums don't HAVE to be here they can be shut down what would you do then" and then the other 980958639505 eventual arguments.)

Was the site profitable? Most people don't like investing time fixing something that they're losing money on.

I don't regularly visit many Forums anymore(3 to be exact), but AT is the only one through all these years I have ever noticed regular "Maintenance" done on. What's worse are the current problems with Avatars and Search though. For such a highly "Maintained" website, there are a seemingly growing list of broken things on it. Perhaps "the Cloud" just isn't ready for such tasks? Perhaps something else is to blame? Either way it is an odd situation.
