"Do you think that he is gonna break NDA (which is still a while away) so you can feel all warm inside?? I think not "

Definately not. 😛

"Why is that? It was a review of current GPU's with an advanced graphics engine. The gf4 is not only not available yet, but most people won't have them right away. So, why doesn't that mean anything? "

You're right I shouldn't have said it didn't mean anything, I should have said it doesn't mean much. (Simply a poor choice of wording)

Second, IMHO (and I know a number of ppl that would agree), you can't call the GF3 line very current when it's going to be replaced in 11 days. He could have either waited 2 weeks or made some comment about updating the article when the GF4s are available. Also alot of people here (although the enthusiasts here are not a average sample of the population) will have GF4s quickly after their release.

"ust a nvidia fanboi response. he can't stand the fact that ati came out on top, so he's gotta throw in the phantom G4, which obviously isn't out yet.

why doesn't he go ahead and include all future vid cards that could possibly come into existence. or better yet, just make the blanket statement that the last video card to ever come out w/ the most advanced features some time in the very distant future will be the ABSOLUTE best video card EVER."

Heh, interesting theory. However if ATI had a new chip coming out in 11 days I would have the same reaction. I'm actually very impressed that ATI, and think that they may offer some good competition for nVidia in the near future (which is good for all of us), if they can just get their drivers under control.

"So I guess Anand's KT266A round-up means nothing until he includes a 333 and a 333A, right? "

I haven't read the article and I'm not sure about the 333 and 333A that you're talking about but where/are they to be released within 2 weeks of the article going up?

"Give ATI 8500 some credit guys. It is the best card, when its driver works. I only hope that ATI spend more time with their driver. They have a great card."

I completely agree, I'm probably going to put a 8500 in the sys I'm currently preping.

take my post in the spirit it was intended.

if you had said, he probably should have waited for 2 weeks till the g4 came out, or if you had said, this was a nice review BUT one can't forget that the g4 is coming out in 11 days, i wouldn't have made any comment on it.

as you yourself admited, the choice of the word "Any" gave me the impression that you were reacting a bit extremely and as such i posted an extreme. 🙂

once again, no harm was intended, just having a bit of fun 🙂

OK, I'm not flaming here or anything, but wouldn't you take CURRENT to mean what people are CURRENTLY USING? I don't have many other definetions for the word in this context. That being said, I'd list anywhere from the Geforce2 and up to be current enough for what Anand was trying to say.

That being said, the article "does mean much".

<< This is certainly one of Anand's coolest articles. Good job!

Btw NFS4, are you feeling somewhat better now that it's clear that some developers are taking "advantage" of the newest generation graphics cards. 🙂
>>

Somewhat 😉

This is a nice article, showing what a DX8.1 tuned engine can do with today's hardware. What about showing a Max Payne bench too? I think Max Payne stresses the system more than UT ever did.

I'd also like to see a Quake3 comparison. Sure, its not a DX8.1 optimized game, but the benches will show off the brute power of the cards versus their feature sets. Not all games use all the DX features, so it'll be nice to see that as well.

Nice test but I would have also liked to have seen image quality screenshots. Also, these scores are great for developers and graphic card companies so that they can tune their drivers but it really shouldn't be released to consumers since the product is far from being released. This benchmark would be great if it was done with the final product. How soon before Unreal 2 is released?

Why Max Payne? You haven't heard of 3dmark2001?😛 And this isn't UT, its the latest build of the unreal engine. This is the future, Max Payne is the past, if you get what I mean.

3DMark2001 is nice to look at, but who can actually PLAY 3dmark2001? 🙂 Sure, this build is heads and shoulders above UT, but we can't see that -- we just know by what the article says. I would really enjoying seeing a comparison of something we can see TODAY versus months from now when the game is released.

extremely interesting article...

and as much as I'd like to bash nvidia...i will...the 8500 dominated.

i wonder how the Kyro III will do.

<< Unreal2 faq

What will be the recommended system requirements to play the game?

A. Unreal II will look stunning on high-end systems, but you should be able to play the game just fine on a P2/450 with a first generation GeForce card.

LIES!!!!!!! 😀

Shiznit! Though I'd assume that my Voodoo5 5500 performs slightly better than the Kyro2, it looks like I'll soon need to retire it. 🙁

One wonders if the ATI Radeon 8500 is sacraficing image quality to achieve those high numbers. Could proper implementation of fogging effects bring that number way down?

perhaps fog could bring the number down, there are MANY types of Fog effects as you may or may not know.

as for why the 8500 beats the Ti500, it's pretty simple. in it's current form the engine does NOT use the DX8 pixel/vertex shaders, that's why the Radeon 7500 and Geforce 2's faired well despite their lack of DX8 support. therefor the engine is more stressful on the T&L engine, which as you may know the Radeon 8500 has a more powerful/fast engine than the Ti500.

when the Vertex/pixel shaders are implimented I'd like to see what happens then..

<< Impressive! I'm happy to see the much-less-expensive Radeon 8500 perform so well! (maybe some day I'll get one!)
I had to laugh though... People who claimed the KyroII (Prophet4500) to be no more than a TNT2 kept paces with a Geforce2pro quite well. The geforce2MX cards (especially 200!!) were almose laughable - you'd be better off with a TNT2 than an MX200! 😀
>>

and the kyro II doesnt even have T&L! :Q very impressive card, especially for the price...cant wait for the kyro III

It comes as little surprise that if Unreal2 was released tommorow not one person in these forums could run it at decent speeds and levels of eye candy.

I'm going to need at least one CPU and video card upgrade to run the game well, just as I expected a long time ago.

Ur tellin me, but this kind of demanding software is what put's the drive in technilogical advancements.

Hey don't get me wrong, I wasn't complaining in the least. In fact I'm happy that this is the case because:

(1) Technologically speaking the game will be awesome.
(2) I was right about my prediction especially when I was telling people that certain cards were obsolete.

This is evidence that ATi's drivers are improving. The hardware is already top-notch, and now the driver support is finally beginning to trickle down. Perhaps R300 will truly be a GeForce 4 killer.

i'm just glad my ti200 clocks like a ti500.

and this really isn't surprising, unreal was named that because the system requirements were unreal. p2 300 and voodoo 2 made it playable. which was expensive as hell back in the day. not that vid cards have gotten cheaper, (except in the tnt2/voodoo3 shootout of '99) but processors are dirt cheap now.

I think (not exactly the 3D card expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong) that the lack of "on GPU" T&L is actually why it's so fast, at least when paired to something as quick as an XP 2000.

i just wonder how many fps it would get wiht my celly 2 850 🙂

Certainly more than with my dual P2/450 🙂.

But I don't need a Kyro or a lousy GeForce - Rage 128 power (...cough...) all the way 🙂.
