To each his own...I'm one of those that don't like the word, but I don't go spouting off about it.

me too. I would not like it if someone calls me Oriental.

But back in the days in the U.S., oriental was used in a derogatory way...ie separation of races like "oriental schools."

So you don't like being called Oriental because you're not supposed to like being called Oriental. Interesting.

WHERE did you get that conclusion??????????

edit.
I don't like being called Oriental because TO ME I AM NOT ORIENTAL. I AM on the broader sense -- ASIAN AMERICAN, but more precisely VIETNAMSE. I just don't like that term (oriental) being referred to me.
You admit that you are of Vietnamese origin and are Asian-American, but you deny that you've an Oriental background?

hahah an (il)logical circle?

i'm asian and i don't find it offensive being called Oriental. it does sound dated, though.

i preferred to be called "that really good looking guy" or "that guy who's really good in bed".......or "Matt" would suffice, since that's my name :p

Oriental is a subcategory of Asian in my book - Asian means everyone east of Caucas moutains (russians, kazachs, mogols, india, china etc). Oriental is jsut the east asian part of it - chinese, japanese, koreans, phillipinos etc.

I guess it's offensive in people's republic of california, along with jap (which stands for jewish american pricess here) and an onslaught of other things that the rest of the US has no clue about.

This is me caring.

Serious. You have whites/caucasian, blacks/african americans, mexicans/hispanics, asians, indians, middle-easterners and eskimos (from Antartica).

For the last time. It is MY preference to not BE CALLED ORIENTAL. However, I am not going to call someone a racist bastid just because he calls me oriental but I will not like it also. You can call yourself oriental ALL YOU WANT, i can give a rat ass. Your thread specifically asks, "WHY DO SOME PEOPLE TAKE OFFENSE TO THAT?" and I answered your question (because in the past, it was used in a derogatory way). Now stop spinning my words around and just accept my answer. You asked a question, I answered. You don't like it? Too bad. k thanks bye

i dont care about the origin of the word or the webster definition. But being a white guy with a ton of asian friends, i've heard people call them "oriental" and quite frankly they don't like it. It's a completely outdated word and is an adjective for some inanimate object, like a rug. They find it derrogatory. Over time language changes and some socially acceptable words become not so acceptable and this is one of those words it seems. I see no reason to use the word when "asian" or "asian american" are available. In fact I usually only hear people use "oriental" to describe a person's ethnicity when I'm out in some rural type area or that person comes from an area not so diversified.

Is the word "asian" a bit of a misnomer? Perhaps. We pretty much use the word to describe only people of east asian/pacific islander decent. But that's whats the social norm nowadays (at least on the west and east coast we I switch between). I'm Armenian, and Armenia is technically on the continent of Asia but I'm not "asian." I'm caucasian, in fact I'm more caucasian than most white people because Armenia is in "CaucAsia."

And on a side note: Persian is a diferent word than "oriental." It describes the people of a nation. Iran is basically whats left of the Persian empire. Thats why the people are Persian, the rugs are Persian, and the food is Persian. There are also Afghani rugs too. But there is no nation "Orient," so comparing Persian to Oriental is not a fair one.

I like to be called "pangean". If someone calls me something else I get offended and cry. Then I sue for discrimination.

I take offense with having to put "Asian" when I fill out forms that ask for race. The reason is twofold. First, my race is Indian, but my great grandparents went to the Caribbean as indentured laborers. I have nothing in common with real Indians. Second, those real Indians have nothing in common with East Asians (Orientals). The term "Asian" is the most arbitrary.

Edit: Also, Europe and Asia are one continent, Eurasia. There is no such thing as Asia. The Indian "subcontinent" is a separate continent that was smashed into Eurasia.

Q: would you be labelled westindian, trinidad tobago?

funny, i can't find enough self labelled 'white americans' ever able to intuitively call themselves E.A's... they seem hesitant or confused for that half a second... an unfamiliar position that i find amusing to be the case, glad it's seemingly not the case now.
