an incident at the mall parking lot

the mall by me is packed all the time on the weekends. sometimes it can take half an hour before you find a spot, and that's at the far end of the parking lot.

generally what i do is i'll look for shoppers leaving the mall and follow them to their car. so i found this couple, hands full of shopping bags, walking out of the mall towards the parking lot.
i politely roll down my window and ask if they are leaving, to which they respond "yes, our car is over there" and points to a black 1997 nissan altima. so i proceeded to follow them to their car.

meanwhile, this lady and her 8 year old son in a 2003 toyota camry is camped out in one of the aisles just waiting for a car to leave (she is about a couple hundred of feet away from where the eventual spot is). i go around her and arrive at the altima and flash my blinkers.

before the couple even starts their car, the lady in the camry comes flying next to me, blocks the altima from leaving, rolls down her window, motions me to roll mine down, so i comply... and she starts to scream at me, saying she's been waiting 30 minutes for a spot and that this is her spot.
i calmly reply to her that you have no right to claim this spot, your blinkers were not on, it doesn't matter how long you've been waiting, you are about 200 feet away and you're wrong to think that you can just camp out have dibs on the first available spot.
but basically she didn't hear a word i said because she was so irate and busy screaming at me.
after 2 minutes of this, a car 100 feet (i believe it was a 2004 benz e-class) ahead leaves and she floors it and takes that spot. i'm left shaking my head, as i wait for the altima to leave so i can pull in.

eventually, we meet up again at the mall entrance, where she was purposely waiting for me and she starts to argue with me again. She starts to get heated again and i calmly tried to reason with her. i rehashed all my above arguments and explain we both have spots now, nothing to be upset over and she calls me an asshole.
at that point i gave up reasoning with her and i told tell her she should watch her language in front of her own child, she should set a good example for her son, blahblahblah all just to piss her off further which worked wonderfully. she goes completely berserk, screaming F you, i'm a mofo, etf.

my gf just pulls me into the mall to get out of that scene but afterwards she gets mad at me for purposely provoking her and continuing the argument (which was true 😛)
i just said i did no wrong, i was calm the whole time, did not raise my voice, did not use inappropriate language, etc.
spent the next 30 minutes arguing with the gf about the argument 🙁

cliffs:
1. mall parking lot is packed.
2. i follow a couple to their car
3. crazy lady screams at me, claiming the spot is hers even though she was a mile away
4. we both eventually get spots
5. argument (at least for her) escalates at mall entrance
6. gf pulls me away gets mad at me 🙁

WTF... It's July and it takes 30 minutes to find a spot at your mall? That's absurd. I wouldn't even go to a mall like that.

I would just avoid the mall if it was that bad. The woman sounds like she was in the wrong. And your GF should have seen the humor in provoking someone so stupid, IMO.

EXACTLY. i was laughing inside as all this was happening, and out loud as soon as i left the scene.
it's so fun to be able to provoke someone so easily.
she was giving me the finger and everything, and she must've been in her mid 40's.

Why argue with a crazy person like that? I would have thrown her a little debbie snackpack and went about my business.

I've taken provoking people like that to an Art Form. I get a warm fuzzy feeling in me when I can get someone so pissed off at something so trivial. Being completely calm is the key to this because it just makes the other person get that much more pissed off because they want a reaction out of you.

Haha, instead of a throw down wad of cash to distract muggers, a thrown down Ho-Ho.

Sounds fine to me. Does remind me of something I saw a while back. A guy was in his car waiting for another car to leave. He was there maybe 20-30 seconds when they finally started to pull out. As soon as they pulled out (hadn't even moved forward yet) some lady pulls AROUND both cars and snags the spot. How wrong is that?

Someone like that will return to their car one day to find "HAVE A NICE DAY" keyed into the hood.

Man, I was just there (for "happy hour" after work, never for shopping). Parking is terrible. The people are worse.

I've had insane stuff happen there, actually, so I'm not surprised by your encounter. One time I was leaving the parking lot with a few co-workers in the car, and I put my signal on as I was going to turn left to get out of the place. I was passing an open spot (a rarity there), and apparently I put my blinker on too soon, as some douche coming towards me thought I was turning into the spot instead of out of the lot, so he floored it, forcing me to jam on my brakes, just to get into the spot. It was nuts.

I've seen people screaming at each other all the time, though. I think it's the combination of a lot layout that was seemingly designed by a complete retard, plus the crazy hoops you need to jump through just to get off the highway and into the place, plus the dense population of the area. The combination manages to turn otherwise normal people into screaming, crazy, idiots.

Never been there, but being as that you're in NJ, I'd go to one of the other nearby malls unless it has some exclusive store. Are all of the malls in Paramus that crowded?

I avoid the mall like the plague between Thanksgiving and Christmas... I hate crowded parking lots, and I hate crowds.

Where's the option for "both drivers are assholes"? Who on earth goes to a mall like that?

Apparently a lot of people. Hence the parking problem.

yes, more than a lot.
and paulxcook, how was i being an asshole?

You read it wrong. If you remember, I agreed with your course of action. GagHalfrunt was the guy calling you an asshole.

Your story reminds me of the Big Lebowski when they're in the car after Walter pulls a gun in the bowling alley: "I am calm dude."

whoops, all the nesting got me confused. yes, i meant gaghalfrunt.

I think it was your spot, but I can see why the GF was pissed at you. Should have just ignored the nut case, and went on with your day.

that reminds me of this incident with me ...

i was driving up a parking garage thats like 5 stories high, and I get to the almost top floor where there is no ceiling and i notice the car at the top of the hill before the next 180 degree turn is turning around, so I do the same before I start going up that ramp.

then as I'm going down to the bottom of the garage I see a car start to back out so I stop and put my blinker on.

the woman who was above me on the top floor of the parking lot is now behind me and she starts honking her horn at me waving her hands at me acting as though it was her spot. i made a gesture with my arm like wtf are you crying about and took the spot once the other car left.

it was just hilarious how she thought she deserved the spot since she was in the garage "in front" of me until we both had to turn around and go back down the garage since there were no empty spots.
