It is indeed fake. The places are real as I know where some of the farms are that are in the show. Levi hangs out at a certain restaurant that is near my parents in Lebanon county. Hes very "English".

Weird that someone bumped this thread. I was just thinking about it yesterday - spent 7 hours at an Amish auction - tons of Amish there; Amish to English was about 2:1. But, I was thinking - if it was any other religion or group of people that were caricatured the way that show does, people would be absolutely up in arms about it. That show is to the Amish as having a show with black people constantly eating watermelon would be.

Shame on the Discovery channel for continuing to air crap like that. (Scored some awesome deals at the auction.)

dr pizza, what did you get?
Antique desk to replace the ikea or sauder or whatever brand piece of temporary furniture, a fruit press, a butcher block stand for the kitchen - heavy, solid. And, a beautiful china cabinet. The cabinet was 7 feet tall by 6 feet long. One of the Amish guys later said to me that I probably got the best deal at the auction. I resold it for almost 4 times what I bought it for (and it sold in 10 minutes), and the guy who bought it from me was absolutely amazed I sold it for so little. 🙂

How do these shows work, is it really just acting
It depends on the nature of the show. Something like Deadliest Catch is real in as much as they really are fishing, but most of the dramatic moments are staged. The actors are essentially given conflicts and coached on what to say, or they'll go act out a scenario the producers have come up with.

For a show like Amish Mafia however, it would just be straight 100% acting. No different than CSI except with cheaper actors and a refusal to admit it's fiction.

They need a show to replace American Choppers

See, at least with that show, a motorcycle got built. That part was real, if the rest wasn't.

There's very little real about most other reality shows...Amish Mafia, Bar Rescue, Pawn Stars, any of the car rebuilding shows, etc.

I work for a large company with many service tecnicians. Sometimes, our techs text in to us that they can't get to a residence requesting service, because a number of blocks and roadways are shut down for filming this farce known as "Amish Mafia".
