Interesting...you want to fight for the "American" cause of Freedom by forgoing a fair trial and burning this man without any thought? Brilliant.
I don't think there was any treason involved, and I don't see why he should be prosecuted as anything other than a POW.
He practiced FREEDOM OF RELIGION and became a follower of Islam. This religion that he found caused him to make a journey to Pakistan and eventually Afghanistan, just as many other people travel to foreign lands in search of some sort of enlightenment.
I'm sure he didn't consider himself an American citizen, but how would he have shed himself of that title? The fact that he is "American" should have nothing to do with his capture or punishment.
I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this post, but rational thinkers usually do get criticized. It's so much easier to conform to the ignorance that surrounds us.
I'm sure most of you also support this EXTREMELY racist "war on terrorism," but then again, why shouldn't you? I mean...taking away people's freedom of appearance (does that even need to be a declared Freedom? I'm referring to racial profiling, of course) and their freedom of religion goes against everything that "America" stands for.
