the worst charities on list are the one that mimic well-known charity names that fool donors.

ie:
At the top of the list is Kids Wish Network, which gave nearly $110m to corporate solicitors

The data show the worst charities devote less than 4% of donations to direct cash aid.

Even as they plead for financial support, operators at many of the 50 worst charities have lied to donors about where their money goes, taken multiple salaries, secretly paid themselves consulting fees or arranged fund-raising contracts with friends. One cancer charity paid a company owned by the president's son nearly $18 million over eight years to solicit funds. A medical charity paid its biggest research grant to its president's own for-profit company.

Collectively the 50 worst charities raised more than $1.3 billion over the past decade and paid nearly $1 billion of that directly to the companies that raise their donations. :(

Here's he list:

HOLY SHIT IT'S A USEFUL NEWS REPORT!

Haven't seen one of these since 1962.

No but seriously, there is a reason why I don't give money to anyone or anything. If I want to show support I will show up with crap I no longer use to donate (Goodwill/Salvation Army) or directly bring canned food to donate.

The FSF, EFF, American Whitewater, and American Rivers aren't on that list. Give to one of them.

I always feel bad when they call and I say I can't do anything. Especially kids charities. Now I never will again.

That's classy, rip on people who have suffered from cancer or cancer in the family who are scammed by these charities

Yes, because thats that I intended to imply - ripping on people who were actual victims of cancer

Couldn't possibly be from all the retard publicity of centering on one type of cancer.

I wouldn't considered PETA a charity like I would consider other things(Make a Wish, etc) a charity. PETA is more of a political non-profit than it is a charity.

Oh - I guess thats a point. I was basically thinking "Anyone who asks for money" as a charity. So thats a good question for the OP article, is a non-profit like PETA defined as a charity?

No doubt there's crooked charities and executives, but simply basing a charity's "goodness" off of monetary efficiency is a pretty one-dimensional measure.

Peta charity review:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=4314

16% efficiency

i think all those on the worst 50 list is like 10% or less

You're reading it wrong.

Fundraising Efficiency: The amount spent to raise $1 in charitable contributions.

PETA spends $0.16 to raise $1

Organizations like PETA are expected a majority of their funds on staff, media, etc., as their primary mission is education and advocacy, not raising money for food, medicine, and shelter for animals.

This is why charity is for chumps. Sick people should get a damn job already and pay for their treatments themselves, not always trying to guilt trip us for freebie funds over the phone.

Most of the funds collected are kept by the 3rd-party solicitors that cold call you while you are eating dinner, trying to take a nap ... or sitting in the bathroom. Remeber the "no-call" directive a few years ago? We need it back ... now!

Thanks op, I'll not be donating to many charities after reading this arcticle.

Cut the middle man out. Do some research and give direct.

We give to the children’s hospital here, not a charity but the hospital. We give to our local volunteer fire department, not a “we raise money for the local police and fire…” but walk in the say here’s a check.
Do the same so your money gets to the source, not some slimly middle man and his BiL.

This is what infuriates me about kids fundraising for their school activities. I'm not gonna buy some shitty magazine subscription for $20 that 80% will end up going to some sleazy company.

If you came to my door and said "hey, can you write me a check for $20 so I can go to such and such", you'd have a lot more luck.

But seriously though, why can't parents just pay for shit their kids do? When I have kids I'm going to refuse to be apart of any fundraising efforts.

Some of that money is spent on drugs to kill animals, and dumpsters to throw the bodies in.

At one time feed the children was ranked one of the best charities in the world.

Now I don't feel bad about being stingy with my money when it comes to charity.
