I'm stunned that Komen for the Cure wasn't on here. They seem to spend more money on ads than fighting breast cancer.

This is a fundraising efficiency metric and most people aren't reading it right.

If I give you $10M to feed the homeless, you could either spend that $10M feeding the homeless, or you could spend all $10M on a fundraising organization to get you more money. If that org gets you $11M in donations, you come out ahead.

My $10M allows you to buy $11M and you now have more $ to feed the homeless with.

This is one of those slippery slope things because if you don't spend money to get money, the money will go to the guy who does. It's sort of an "arms race" in fundraising.

I don't understand how it's not criminal.

When you combine both the cash return to solicitors and overheads due to inefficiency (or outright embezzlement), how are the people running the Bradenton Project Cure, for example, not in jail when zero dollars of ~$30 million in donations are directed to the cause? Or why is the charity not taken away from them?
