everything's removed from the yard except the grill which is against and defending the back glass door. vehicles moved up against the house, now nothing to do but wait till power goes bye bye. dot expecting to start closing the tunnels around 6 which means movemtn going to start getting fairly restrictive. a hint of water vaport in the air and small breeze building up, not much else though. everything is on the charger to enjoy them while it last.

damn, if you had a board laying flat on the pier you have almost enough water up there now to get you moving.

Might want to secure the grill lid with a bungee or something, if the lid flies up it could wind up breaking the glass..

ran some last minute errands today (re: liquor store run)... I could use a bag of ice for my cocktails, but I don't think I have room for it in my freezer.

maybe I'll eat my words, but outside of costal areas, I'm not expecting anything more serious than we'd see with any other storm (eg: flooding in the places that always flood when it rains and localized power outages)

the one precaution I did take was parking my car a couple blocks away on higher ground, just in case (no available parking spaces on my own block and my usual parking area is alongside the river)

have a fairly constant but not necessary hard rain. several of the standard shitty draining areas that are never addressed have flooded out. wind is just now really starting to pick up.

starting to get some small limbs and limited trees going down. about an hour ago I drove up to the local hardware store to refill the propane, they had run out last night while I was there but told me they'd be getting more. funny thing was that this store has one of those local post office depots and the mail mail was pulling up as I left.

while I was driving around checked out the local area, couple stores open, gas station/convience and hardware but most else is closed. some idiots still have loose stuff out in the yards including trash cans left from trash day yesterday. many cards parked up in yards but did see a few actually on the streets still, those are either some brave or stupid people.

flipping through local weather coverage now, looks like at least one confirmed mini tornado has been formed.

well that was quick, winds started to pick up then got bad quick. the tree-like-shrubs around the house now enjoying a nice permanent 75 degree bend. looks like the first several outer rain bands and just now getting over the house so shoul dbe real fun in another hour.

local's just plotted it out on tv and said we're about 8 hours at current direction/speed from having the eye just overhead.

This will be a long 8 hours, like you I got freaked when I saw a tree bend that far over, lot's more of that when the eye gets close, keep posting if you are able to..

All prepped here. Did a food run yesterday and moved some items today off the deck, so they do not get blown around. Also some flower pots put indoors. Not much else we can do. Just hope the power does not go out, or if does not for long. We do have a generator to run important circuits, like lights, refrigerator and furnace, but we would not run it constantly.

Prolly gonna lose power but at least the winds died down enough that it shouldn't rip off the roof, don't expect a fast return on the power though, there will be so much to do they work on resolving the issues first that will restore power to the most people at once, if it's just a couple of houses on a feeder it might be awhile.

Va Beach.

Was about to post that the weather service had sent official tornado warnings on the TV...then power went out. Rebooted...then power went out. Back on for now but already over 100k out in the area so not looking good for long. At least if the cell towers stay on I can hook the phone up to tether on the netbook.

What happens is the cell infrastructure get overloaded (like when the earthquake hit), everyone trying to make calls at the same time, if you've got a landline your golden as that's buried and I never lost home phone during any storm.

I'm ready, not that there was much I could do (condo). 25 miles n/w of Manhattan, not expecting major disaster here. Prepared for power outages & have plenty of food. Wasn't worried about flooding until my neighbor told me that the tiny little brook down the hill actually has flooded up this high once or twice in the past. Can't do anything about that, though. Evidently if it does flood, the emergency folks come and take us to the local school uphill. Hurricane threats are a great way to get to know the neighbors.

Best TV advice I've heard so far: the local NJ channel cheerfully announced that since bottled water is sold out, just wait for the rain to start and then go outside, look up, and open your mouth.

never had a problem using a cell line, assuming its still up, during a storm like this. most people just want to sit quite till it's through.

had another power cycle and street is now almost total water curb to curb.

I was in Home Depot early this morning, they had lots of bottled water. Full pallets of it scattered throughout the store along with a good amount of batteries. No generators though.

Gotta love people rushing out to buy supplies that they should already have on hand. I can see a last shopping trip to pick up perishables but why don't people have at least a week or two of food and water on hand? It doesn't take much imagination to envision a power outage affecting a large portion of the US for an extended portion of time and you'll wish you'd spent a hundred bucks at some point on water and canned goods, which can last years. Just seems to me to be basic responsible living.

Hopefully service stays up for 'ya, here in FL cell went down not because of the storm itself just all the retards trying to talk at once..

opened the 1st floor bathroom window just now to look out, parts of the yard starting to get water logged. can see standing water about half the height of the grass.

the good news is we're entering low tide. the really good news is that its supposed to be hitting high tide when the eye goes overhead.
