Update 3: Dev team has been fired apparently!

Update 2:
More quotes from a Team member, these are from the AA3 Steam forums:

On soldier's 'disappearing':
This is most likely due to the maintenance that is being conducted on all systems. Once things are running at normal capacity, the Soldiers should return.

If not (once the server issues are resolved) please let us know and I'll do my best to get this resolved.

Thank you all for your patience.

When asked for ETA of it working:
As much as I'd like to give you an ETA, I simply don't have that answer. Hopefully within the next 24 hours at latest.

About training not counting:
From the looks of things, if you pass the training and are denied on upload, your training should show as completed once Authentication is running at normal capacity.

Update, the following was posted at 5:10 PM EST:
None of us could have imagined the incredible number of players who would try to download and install this game at the same time. Due to this massive number of simultaneous connections, we're having some trouble keeping up with the demand. You should see an increase in both accessibility and gameplay performance very soon. Please see the full post on the Discussion Board for more info.

Update: You can pre-load the game on Steam right now!

Note for those that don't know what this game is: Developed by the US Army, a free online FPS to simulate what it is like to be in the Army. AA3 is doing away with the 'required' training courses to play online like in AA2 -- also, no more jumping (prevents bunny hopping), sprinting animations improved, graphics improved (Unreal engine), running-slide animation enacted, no confirmation on HUD if you killed enemy (have to visually see if you killed enemy), lifelike bullet ricochets, all weapon sounds recorded in studio, all animations and sound done by Special Forces soldiers, realistic body damage (get hit in arm, accuracy lessens), gunfire changes sound depending on distance/environment, etc, in game medics, and more.

It doesn't look like it'll be that graphically demanding so it'll allow more people to play it and get more people into the Army. It's free so I don't see why I wouldn't play it.

I played what I guess is version one for many a month. Completing the sniper training to get the highest level was a biatch. I think the last time I played was just after the special forces module was added. Wonder if my logon id/pw is still valid?

I played the first one. I could never get into the community though, but I'll probably try again if it remains free.

I too haven't played AA in ages. It was fun, but then people started taking it a bit TOO seriously it seemed.

They no longer require you to do training to play - but if you do training you get additional stuff. Also you are supposed to be able to customize character a lot more, slightly faster gameplay, etc. It'll certainly be interesting.

And while graphics don't look Crysis like, the recommended specs are decently high.

Minimum Requirements

* Operating System (OS) -- Microsoft Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) or Microsoft Windows Vista
Processor (CPU) -- 3.0+ GHz Single Core CPU
Memory (RAM) -- 1GB RAM (Minimum)
Video Card -- Direct X 9.0c compliant, Shader 3.0 enabled video card with 256MB RAM (NVIDIA 6600 or better/ATI X1300 or better)
Sound Card -- Direct X 9.0c compliant sound card
Hard Drive Space -- 5GB free hard drive space
Network -- Broadband Internet Connection
DVD-ROM -- 4x DVD-ROM (Disc Copies Only)

Recommended Requirements

* Processor (CPU) -- 2.4+ GHz Dual/Quad Core CPU
Memory (RAM) -- 2GB RAM
Video Card -- Direct X 9.0c compliant, Shader 3.0 enabled video card with 512MB RAM (NVIDIA 7950 or better/ATI X1950 or better)
Sound Card -- Creative EAX 4.0 compliant sound card (Audigy 2, X-Fi series)

That's pretty soon. I played AA2 a while back, when i first started playing PC games, but didn't stick with it. I've been wondering when this one was getting released. I'll totally play, especially if it's free.

The whole training thing put me off playing it a while back (although apparently this isn't a problem anymore). Do people actually join the army after playing this game?

Best kind of advertising their is.

looks interesting. I wonder how long till people complain, "should the US be making video games in a time of Crysis?!"

The game is actually cost-effective as a recruiting aid.

My objection is moral, the government making murder porn to seduce young people to kill.

That actually is really soon. Nothing like getting a decent game for free.

But I don't see how it actually convinces people to join the Army. There aren't any respawn points in RL.

If your teammate can get to you then you might respawn at the medic bunker a few weeks later.

I read an interview with one of the higher ups on the game, and they said it's helped reduce their fallout in the first 8 weeks of training camp from 45% to 10%. People know more about what they're getting into. They've found the "advertisement" is much more effective, too, than spending the money on a superbowl advert. All in all, it's been a very good investment for them.

More power to them I say, it's a free game and I can't say I haven't thought several times about doing the army for 5 years. I'd love to tour the middle east, learn how to cope in those difficult situations.

Requirements are high because this is based on Unreal Engine 3.

This one is "Powered by Unreal Technology".

Eh, this game doesn't look as fun as any of the medal of honor games anyway (yeah yea, not free)

😕

America's Army has always been about realism. It can get frustrating at times but it's always been an enjoyable game.

I never tried the earlier versions, but I might give this one a go.

We obviously have our own definitions for "murder porn", this definitely doesn't qualify for me.
