Here's a good read for everyone:

http://www.westonaprice.org/myths_truths/myths_truths_nutrition.html

Myth: Heart disease in America is caused by consumption of cholesterol and saturated fat from animal products.

Truth: During the period of rapid increase in heart disease (1920-1960), American consumption of animal fats declined but consumption of hydrogenated and industrially processed vegetable fats increased dramatically. (USDA-HNI)

Myth: Saturated fat clogs arteries.

Truth: The fatty acids found in artery clogs are mostly unsaturated (74%) of which 41% are polyunsaturated. (Lancet 1994 344:1195)

Myth: Vegetarianism is healthy.

Truth: The annual all-cause death rate of vegetarian men is slightly more than that of non-vegetarian men (.93% vs .89%); the annual death rate of vegetarian women is significantly more than that of non-vegetarian women (.86% vs .54%) (Am J Clin Nutr 1982 36:873)

Myth: Vitamin B12 can be obtained from certain plant sources such as blue-green algae and soy products.

Truth: Vitamin B12 is not absorbed from plant sources. Modern soy products increase the body?s need for B12. (Soybeans: Chemistry & Technology Vol 1 1972)

Myth: For good health, serum cholesterol should be less than 180 mg/dl.

Truth: The all-cause death rate is higher in individuals with cholesterol levels lower than 180 mg/dl. (Circulation 1992 86:3:1026-1029)

Myth: Animal fats cause cancer and heart disease.

Truth: Animal fats contain many nutrients that protect against cancer and heart disease; elevated rates of cancer and heart disease are associated with consumption of large amounts of vegetable oils. (Fed Proc July 1978 37:2215)

Myth: Children benefit from a low-fat diet.

Truth: Children on low-fat diets suffer from growth problems, failure to thrive & learning disabilities. (Food Chem News 10/3/94)

Myth: A low-fat diet will make you ?feel better . . . and increase your joy of living.?

Truth: Low-fat diets are associated with increased rates of depression, psychological problems, fatigue, violence and suicide. (Lancet 3/21/92 v339)

Myth: To avoid heart disease, we should use margarine instead of butter.

Truth: Margarine eaters have twice the rate of heart disease as butter eaters. (Nutrition Week 3/22/91 21:12)

There's more good stuff there too.

I lost weight by:
Buying lower fat foods and avoiding calories from sodas, etc (still drink beer! hehe)
Eating LOTS of fish!
Eating more veggies and less meat! Instead of 2 burgers and little bit of steamed veggies, I eat one burger and a LOT of steamed veggies.
Don't go back for seconds
Stop eating out for lunch and dinner (Save money too!)

I didn't increase my exercise at all. I didn't lose weight overnight doing this, but OTOH I didn't ever have to struggle to keep it. I can still "cheat" on my diet b/c I just eat less of "cheat" foods as well. I will probably keep the weight off, as well since it was a lifestyle change and it's now completely normal to not eat until I'm stuffed and to fil up on veggies instead of meats.

It's not that hard to eat healthy. Everyone knows about the food pyramid right? If you follow it, I don't see how you can go wrong, even if you consider it propoganda from the US. Dept. of Ag. :)

Healthy eating and moderate exercise is all it takes. You feel better, have more energy, get sick less and stay out of that nasty hospital. It's a no brainer. Let's get busy!

I don't see why you need to lose weight. 155lbs and 5'10" sounds just right.

I had convinced myself it wasn't possible for me to get into shape. Once I really got into it I found out it was pretty easy. Much easier than looking at my fat ass in the mirror every day.

What was your diet/secret?
I need to lose ~50lbs

I am 6'1" mybe 6'2" and I weigh 195, I have weighed 195 for the past few years. I have gone through 12 hour days where i spen from 6:45 in the morning till 8:30 swimming, and 3:55 till 7:00 running in soccer and I never really lost weight, just fat. Then I would do nothing over the summer and off times, and I have a large keg instead of a 6-pack. Nothing really changed but that doesn't bother me, since I know I was healthy, but my eating habits are really horrible. I wouldn't mind gainng wieght as long as I were healthy, but I keep a lot of exercise in my schedule, but I always have a "belly", no matter what. But I have a feeling that is life.

Well thanks to JellyBaby aka Richard Simmons, my fettucine alfredo and nicely seasoned steak went cold and another cigarette was "smoked" by the ashtray. Can I please have the freedom of killing myself the way I choose?

I'm not fat. I'm married and middle-aged.

Can I please enjoy the few pleasures left in my life.
