Ruben has an album coming out in September. He has been Grammy nominated and his first album went platinum.

Fantasia just starred in a movie about her life...yep, she's faded away. BTW, she got FOUR Grammy nominations. She has another album coming out in November.

Ok, so American Idol gets you publicity. Thing is, how do you get onto the show in the first place? Most likely through a screening test of some sort where a panel evaluates a potential competitor's marketability - will they get ratings? If so, put them on the show. If they can get a record deal, that's fine too. William Hung got onto the show, and he can't sing for sh~t. But he got on. Why? The people making the show knew he'd help with ratings. And he actually got a record deal, oddly enough.

So concerning "being noticed" - the "talent" out there has to get noticed by the American Idol scouts too. It all is probably part of the same industry talent trawler, but some of the "talent" found is channeled through American Idol as a marketing ploy. It's a way for the record companies to get America to vote for who they want to pay money to listen to in the future, and money is made in the process of airing this process.

No artist that made it big from that show was original or even good.

The Grammy Awards would say otherwise.

Also, within a single season of American Idol I see a greater diversity of talent and genre's of music than I get to see in any other medium. Last season alone I saw about half a dozen vocal performances that make the best pop stars look stupid. Chris Daughtry and Katharine McPhee came out of nowehere and either are better than dozens of 'made for radio' pop stars.

While American Idol producers pick the group, it's really up to the audience to do the sifting, and the format does work. Beats having record producers or radio DJ's pick it for you.

BTW, if the audience chooses the winner of the talented performer...and another guy runs a close second...how come the second guy doesn't go on to be a big performer like the first one? That's right, because they give the winner stardom. They give that person a record deal, professional musicians, and marketing hype.

Should the next American Idol be decided by the audience of a TV show or by supporting a talented musician that is out there performing and playing gigs and is really impressing the hell out of crowds?

Bo Bice did an Accapalla during the end of the season a couple years ago that it still getting shudders of awe in rock forums, and deserves it.

Katherine McPhee sang a 'judges pick from Simon' last season that is one of the best female solos I've ever heard.

Been to dozens of concerts in my life as well, along with a few operas. I still hear some Idol performances that are WAY better and hardly over-produced. The initial CD's by some of the artists might be over-produced, but their next ones aren't.

Several times in Idol history the runner up has sold more CD's than the actual winner. Chris Daughtry came in fourth, and the dude was offered the lead for Fuel I believe.

Her argument is that a lot of talented people don't get noticed.

Something to add to this - a lot of talented people simply might not be marketable. They might have a really weird laugh, so they'd be made fun of in the media, which could hurt record sales, despite having an excellent singing voice, or incredible musical skill. Maybe it's someone who makes music like Enya's but dresses gothy and has all kinds of tatoos - not very marketable.
Talent does not necessarily equate to profit, and vice versa. Britney Spears was incredibly profitable, but I don't know how many people would call her "musically talented." Why? She was apparently willing to do anything to keep bringing in money. Anything.
