If you live here it's your duty. Nobody WANTS to go to war.

I would go, but I'd never get taken.

Not that I disagree with either of you, but I always found this quote appropriate.

"Do not confuse 'duty' with what other people expect of you; they are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect. "

I would support a draft only if it included everyone of draft age 18-26 -men and women and it was absolutely necessary i.e. if we were invaded not this detour BS we've got going on in Iraq. I would make very few exemptions. I would not exempt people in college, or people with medical conditions who can serve in non-combat roles. Only the most severe medical conditions (i.e. severe mental retardation) would get exempt.

The problem with the draft was that there were so many ways to avoid serving. You have all those neochickenhawks and rich people's kids getting out of the draft because of connections, or "medical conditions" or college. If you made the draft truly equal and random, just watch as support for it drops.

Exactly, there were way too many ways to get out of the draft before.

Absolutely. If we were invaded, give me my gun.

However, I will not fight another mans war(If I do not believe in the cause).

Thats once reason no nation has seriously entertained the notion of invading the U.S. mainland since the early 1800s. This country has more than enough firearms to discourage that.

could you imagin that it would be the only time that the army, gangs, the mob, militant groupes and the general public were all fighting on the same sode

That would not be good for the attacker. There are private distributors that have untold thousands of firearms and god knows how many million rounds of ammunition in their warehouses. Arming a signifigant percentage of the populace wouldn't take long.

So true. I like that idea. :D

Being invaded is no joke, though. :Q

I have a question.. Let's say China decided to pull some sh!t right now.. What would we do? What percentage of our troops/equipment/etc is in the Middle East? :Q

Is the Western Pacific virtually defenseless right now?

It's a good thing virtually no other country has any significant Navy.

I believe everyone should be drafted to serve as a garbage man for 3 years also. You live in a clean country and enjoy the wonders of a good sanitation system. If there is a draft, suck it up and clean that poop.

This nation has turned into a bunch of beached whales that sun themselves with TV waves and are too afraid of their own vomit to step up for the cleanliness you should love. Even if you dont agree with the head janitor, you should have no qualms about giving a few years for the sanitation of the U S of A if it is asked of you.

Oh and lets not forget about serving as a firefighter, and a paramedic, and a park ranger...There is no way you can appreciate the contributions they make without being in their shoes!!.

The point is, you don't have to get shot at to appreciate your country. You don't have to fight to love your country, you don't have to join the military to serve your country. You can see the guy who is doing something else, thank him for what he does and go back to making your own contribution. In fact, there are many people who have made significant contributions to the country without ever putting on a uniform. I personally feel like i can make a greater contribution by doing something else rather than joining the army. If the US were invaded, sure I would be in line, but in other political wars I feel like that's not how I can best contribute to society

*Note* I'm not saying that military service is not good or anything, just saying that I feel that I would make bigger difference elsewhere.

Well, they aren't going to fly United over here. So the only other way is to go by ship.

I doubt that much would slip past the attack subs or even a single carrier group.

China doesnt have the equipment to get its troops to the USA for an invasion. Their planes/ships would be on the bottom of the pacific before they got past P.H.

I I got drafted, I wouldn't dodge it or anything. I am a man, and as such I don't cry when I get hurt, I eat meat just because I like to know something died for my food, and I go to war when my country needs me to fight and die for it.

I don't really see the point of a draft being reinstated, and its obviously just a ploy by the democrats to stir up controversy over Bush's war. But if I were drafted, I'd go fight in this war - it doesn't matter if its a just war, I've lived in America all my life, and despite its flaws, I'd die for it if I had to.

I think we have 11 or 12 carriers so I doubt the Pacific is defenseless. I would guess that given the post cold war reductions we are spread pretty thin though.

Serving to protect America is one thing, serving to fight in an ill conceived war that was sold to the American Public on half truths and outright BS is another. Hat's off to the soldiers doing their duty over there, shame on the Dub wasting their lives over there. Unfortunately the Dub with the blessings of the American Public screwed the Pooch with his ill conceived war and we now have to clean up the mess we made.

This war is a great divider. People look at an issue like the draft, and feel obligated to choose between needs of government, and the needs of the country. More and more it seems to me they are at odds.

Come on Fausto, the biggest idiots on AT dont have a chance to catch STDs, anyway, so you arent helping them all that much, now are you?

Now, if you were preventing diseases you could catch from exposure to a keyboard, then... you'd be their god.

Maybe AT doesn't have to worry about STDs, but the general population does. He's contributing to society and somehow it doesn't involve a gun. Difficult to imagine being productive without a gun, huh?

I was half-kidding, but you do see my point; any more biowarfare stuff pops up and you know damn well who'll be busting their asses to get things sorted out. I'd definitely get tapped to pull extra duty since I have a background in TB (which is very similar to anthrax).

well the range of committment is from a few years to basically life, since you might die.

you're right, we live in this country and enjoy the freedom it provides. how is this related to the war in iraq? people should be willing to fight for that which they reap the benefits from, such as our freedom, but something unrelated, i don't think people have any obligation to waste years of their life.

This is ATOT, if you did a poll 'Are you male, female, or other?', I'd guess male would be the #2 choice & female the #3... It's entirely unscientific & inaccurate and shouldn't be the basis for a post like this.. unless of course you're just trolling :p
