The point is that the US has had the most number of USEFUL inventions by American inventors, the US has had the most important
geniuses, the US has the highest GDP by almost 2x 2nd place (Japan). Heck, California would be in the G8 if it was its own country.

There might be lots of poverty, but you can still achieve the American Dream (especially in Las Vegas - lots of open jobs, low mortgages, good school system, etc.)
You just have to try hard to become happy

Do you happen to have a link to the fact that the US has had the most number of useful inventions by American inventors and the most geniuses?

If I am not mistaken, a lot of the technical advances we enjoy today were originally developed by the British and the Nazi Germans. In fact, it was a former Nazi and Nazi technology that helped us land a man on the moon. Lets not forget modern aviation, medical, and even scientific advances have their roots in Nazi Germany.

EDIT:

I am by no means implying Nazi Germany was a good thing. Just a lot of technology we enjoy today was looted from the Germans after WWII.

That's what I figured. I thought many of our greatest modern scientific inventions were actually pioneered by non-Americans who subsequently came to America.

These are all very modern inventions. Are you saying that the US has been the major inventor of modern inventions or are you talking about throughout antiquity? I'm willing to bet that there are several countries that have come out with more.

Fixed your post. The biggest problem out of Buffets mouth himself is the trade deficit. He says that the recent rate cut is meaningless.

You can all thank the Bush administration for basically giving the finger to having a budget. I think that is a Greenspan reference (if not, it is a Buffet reference).

Poverty? Look at all the countries above us on that list you link? Holy smokes! The US is nearly at the bottom. ????

#38 in life expectancy? Because we're all dying of heart disease and cancer because of the rich foods we can afford and all the tobacco we smoke, chew, snort whatever!

Debt, well you've got us there. The people of the US have a big problem spending more money than they have. But why the hell do the foreign investors keep giving us this massive line of credit? They must eventually think they will get they're money back.

Highest electricity consumption? Haha, since when is electricity consumption a bad thing? We are a highly technological nation. Massive server farms, huge oil refineries, massive industrial corporations. They all use electricity. It's just another indicator of the wealth of our nation. Electric services to houses in the US have grown over the years too now that things that were once luxuries are now affordable everyday appliances. Air coniditioning being one of the biggest of these.

#1 in oil consumption? We've got the money to afford big old SUV's and Cadillacs so that's what we drive. Fuel efficiency has meant nothing to this nation until recently as gas was so affordable we didn't care how inefficient our vehicles were. Europe has been paying high gas prices for a long time now. Just another indicator of the wealth of our country.

#1 in millitary spending? Exactly! No one screws with the US because we've got the most technologically advanced millitary on the face of the planet. Yeah you're going to say well terrorists have been taking shots at us. They're the only ones who can with a reasonable hope of survival(well not the suicide bombers) and we're rapidly learning how to fight them better. You will never see another war like WWI or WWII because of our millitary. Their's always nuclear annihilation I guess, but what would be the point? Everybody would go down with us!

#1 in CO2 emissions? Because we're all so damn stinking rich we can afford big honking V8 luxury cars that have no fuel efficiency.

I could go on. But really, all these number you point to do not indicate that we're not the greatest, they indicate we are one of the wealthiest. Now if by great you mean ethical, well then you may have a point. Last time I checked though, money is power, not ethics. The countries with the biggest check books and the most powerful millitaries have been the ones to write the history books.

Right on brother, right on.

It's common knowledge.

See this thing called the Internet?
Power?
Automobile?
Printing press?
Phone system?
Highway system?
Railroad?
Computer?

It's all Bush's fault! :Q

(ducks and runs out of thread)! :D

(j/k - It's actually Darth Cheney! ) ;)

Bye all! :)

(Oh, and we're now 2nd in Exports behind Germany after they passed us last year).

And finally.....I don't know if it's the greatest or not and don't really care. Most of us live pretty damn good compared to the rest of the world. You only get one go around in the big ole life (that we know of) and living here is just fine with my go around! :D

(Doesn't mean that we should just drop the ball though as future American generations standard of living could be drastically effected, not to mention the rest of th world).

You got three out of eight correct. In history class that would get you an F.

Yes, because most of the things he mentioned in a later post were not invented here. The US does not (nor ever has) have a monopoly on science and technology. Many of the greatest minds that influence our daily living never even set foot on these shores. Ignorance like that is the reason why many around the world hate Americans.

Before making such wild claims you better make certain you have your facts correct.

:music:Well the eagle's been flying slow and the flag's been flying low
And a lot of people are saying that America's fixing to fall
But speaking just for me and some people from Tennessee
We got a thing or two to tell you all
This lady may have stumbled but she ain't never fell
And if the Russians don't believe that they can all go straight to hell
We're gonna put her feet back on the path of righteousness
And then God bless America again

And you never did think that it ever would happen again
In America, did you?
You never did think that we'd ever get together again
Well we damn sure fooled you
We're walking real proud and we're talking real loud again in America
You never did think that it ever would happen again

From the sound up in Long Island out to San Francisco Bay
And ev'ry thing that's in between them is our home
And we may have done a little bit of fighting amongst ourselves
But you outside people best leave us alone
Cause we'll all stick together and you can take that to the bank
That's the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the yanks
You just go and lay your head on a Pittsburgh Steeler fan
And I think you're gonna finally understand

And you never did think that it ever would happen again
In America, did you?
You never did think that we'd ever get together again
Well we damn sure fooled you
We're walking real proud and we're talking real loud again in America
You never did think that it ever would happen again

The United States, as it stands today and has stood throughout history, is not a great nation because of statistics. We have not held a position of greatness because we export the most rice or build the best cars. America stands above the rest because it is the Land of Opportunity: a place where people from all over the world, regardless of ethnicity, religion, wealth, or intelligence can come to and live the American Dream.

It's not the numbers; it's the legacy.

You do realize I am an American from Oklahoma? I also took on the op and the garbage he was posting on why we weren't great. But you did not bother to read the whole thread or to even look at the links I posted that proved we did not invent some of the things others claimed we did.

Just typical uneducated redneck dribble without understanding it is not what we have done that makes us great. It is the freedoms we enjoy that does.

Uh, the printing press was invented in Europe in the Late Middle Ages.

If we are not the greatest nation then who is?

I am sure we can take every would be ?greatest nation? and cherry pick stats to make them look bad as well.

Also? in the past 100 years the US has saved Europe from totalitarianism twice. Lead the effort to defeat communism. Powered an amazing world wide economic expansion. And dominates the world culturally with its songs, movies and TV shows (not sure if this is a good thing, but it is certainly true.)

We are not without our flaws but there is not one country in the world that comes close to the amount of positive influence we have had on the planet since our founding.

Umm, that's a little...naive. Like any of the major world powers throughout history, the US did a lot of really great stuff and a lot of really slimey stuff. I can't really say that our legacy is head and shoulders above the competition.

But there are "great" countries and the US is one of them.

Best response in the thread.
