AMD X2 and video encoding

All the tests I've seen involve regular encoding apps but I've yet to see if there is any benefit to the popular DVD Shrink app. Anyone know about this?

Yes DVDshrink does benefit though I am not sure th eamount as of yet... i haven't tested it. The fact that DVDshrink benefitted the P4 w/ HT as I had tested back 2 years ago then it should be fine for the dual cores....That original test was done with an old 3.0beta and I know since then the program has become even more cpu dependent with deep analysis and adaptive correction. I think the P4 has lost its cructh and the AMDs will own this mark as well...

I will test this fully before I am done...

I just tried it on X2. To see what it would take for sure, I shut down both F@H. The most it used was 43%, not even one whole core ! Of course that is ripping and encoding at the same sime, reading from the DVD directly. It would be interesting to see what would happen if I had it on the disk first !

Edit: 13 minutes elapsed. Maybe I will try on another box...

You have something wrong then...cuase I di it on my winchester a few months back and I was able to hold 100% with deep analysis and adpative check in the latest dvdshrink...It has to be somewhat multithreaded since it appears it can beat an FX57 plus I know from this....

http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1266

it was my testing from a few years ago and it made a P4 with Ht on 24.7% faster....

problem is there are so many variables now with the latest test...I do all of my shrinking from HDD...I ripped it first to HDD in those test.....

It is clear that the DVD-rom is the weak point so you need to have a good ripper like my Liteon 16x....

No, I don't think so. What i do love though, is while I'm authoring a DVD, I am playing CS or BF2 in the background w/o losing much time for the Authoring process.

43% is a bit low....like 85-100% on my winchester and now I am running a rate of 8000KB/s and climbing and I am holding at 61-70% usage....(edit: average more like 58%)

I have never seen analysis fly that fast...

FattuKU...Oh yeah this would smoke you and your P4 w/ HT crutch...

After deep analysis the program caches a small info file and so when I actually get to encoding I am holding 100%...both cores in use...

and oh yes I am running sharp(default) adaptive error correction....

I am also doing LOTR Return of the King (full move) 48.7% compression...

The more the compression the slower it will go and perhaps more taxing on the CPU...

LIKE I SAID LOTS OF VARIABLE...But I bet I am still faster then any P4 HT system....P D's will have to be Oc'D to likely win cause each core is going to be slower then a single core without the HT...The XE may be a king but we would have to see if dvdshrink will address all the cores...

Turn on adaptive error correction. Without that it is limited by the speed of your DVD drive.

Also what I have noticed is in the encoding section where it is holding 100% both cores...(why I know Fatty4KU is wrong)....I noticed my buffered is a lot lowe rthen normal...i wonder if that is a sign the 2nd core is keeping up with the work load...

I had a p4 2.4c@3.5ghz I paid 180 for...I have its times and I will run the older beta and we will see how much faster it is eactly...

546 actually, but it would likley beat the best single core Intel has now and that aint no 175 dollars..try again though!!!

a 4400+ is 546?

Sorry.

Sure it will beat the expensive single cores from Intel. That's why you buy a 3.0 w/ht and OC it to 3.6-3.8

That will rape any AMD-single core chip...rape it hard and good.

You stay classy.

Those p4's are badass encoders.

And I agree with the last point....However there is a new SHERIFF in town.....I would like to see the XE do it...It could be the king still if it uses all of the 4 cores and can overcome the penalty of only being 3.2ghz versus say the much faster X2 4800+....

Yeah but I am also near 2.6ghz also which is 5200+ speeds...Based on how we saw the P D core do against the X2's I would imagine it would need 4ghz to compete with it....As for a 3.0ghz oc'd to 3.8ghz...Likely still wouldn't be enough...maybe Technonuts 4.4ghz could be nice but if it is using 100% in the ecnoding portion (both cores) then their is no way any single core P4 oc'd stable enough to run it would touch it...

Who brought it up?

I brought it up first...for once he isn't in full troll mode...

I brought it up to make a oint the app is multithreasded and should be able to take advantage of the 2nd core...

Duvie brought it up in comparison using prevously testing done by himself. But you keep it going w/ you're trolling flame bait.

Why do you even post? They add zero to any discussion.
